Air Conditioning in Hot Weather

    Hi all,

What a flippin scorcher today, 25C in Waterford today.

Anyway noticed something today in my Avensis. When i turned on the Air Con to cool me down in traffic, the cooling fan in the engine came on intermittently, i.e came on for 10 seconds, off for 10 seconds, on for 10, off for 10 and so on. Turned off the AirCon and the cooling fan in the engine didnt come on again, and it only comes on when the Air Con is on.
(Engine Temperature is fine, and coolant level is fine by the way)

    My Question is:

Is this normal in these temperatures?

Yep. They all behave slightly differently, but that's not unusual. The Celica I had a few years back did the same.

My avensis 04 seems to do the same thing.

No Idea. I leave the climate control on all the time

The temperature must have been going just past the threshold when the fan kicks in. If it was a little hotter, the fan would have stayed on.

Is it not the fan for the aircon only. Some cars have seperate fan.

The fan comes on to take the heat away from the cabin, via the refrigerant loop. In cool weather you might find the fan doesn't come on at all. This being due to the aircon rad being cold enough to take the heat away all by itself.
In hot weather, as Kevin Irving said earlier, the fan will come on a lot more or all the time. this is simply because there is a lot more heat to dump, or your aircon has run low in gas.....

My 07 avensis does the same. Not a problem at all. You will also notice the engine revs on dial go up and down a little also as this happens but not noticeable in engine sound. Eats fuel when air con in use.

My car does the same also, not a Toyota though.
