Short trips in diesel cars

    Hi all,
Read a post here recently where a dealer told a guy a diesel car would be no good for him because his daily commute was no more that 3 mins each way and that a diesel car needs to be driven longer or it would mess up some filter.

My first question is, is this true for all diesel vehicles and if so what would be the minimum distance they need to be driven?

Looking to get myself a diesel 4x4, have my eye on a Jeep Compass 1.9 but only travel a short distance to work daily and then 70 -80 k twice a week.

    Thanks for any help.

Just the DPF can get clogged.

Give it a long run (10 miles) once every 100 miles and it'll be grand.

If it doesnt have a DPF then grand.

I'd look at servicing it every 10,000 km though with all those short trips, much more wear and tear with stop start driving.

It's true for all modern diesels with a DPF (to meet emissions regulations.) A quick google says a 2011 Jeep Compass has a DPF on a VW motor.

There's no hard and fast rule, but regeneration might take 20 minutes, and you need to be running the engine at 2000 rpm or better, so 100km/hr for 20 minutes would probably do the trick. Not sure how often it needs to happen, but every week should be OK, I think.

It's not just diesels that don't like short trips, petrols don't like then either.
