Radiohead at The Big Day Out in Galway 1996. It was my first ever gig and I was sober so I remember it very well. A good lineup which included Ron Sexsmith, Divine Comedy, Neneh Cherry, Bluetones and The Cardigans.

As it was Galway it was a pissy day but that didn't upset my enjoyment. Highlight was hearing a few tracks from the as yet unreleased Ok Computer. They played 'Lucky' in the Encore, magic.

Totally agree with this. I remember seeing Radiohead strolling around the city beforehand....not sure if they could do that now!

I preferred The Bluetones that day.

Muse at Marley Park was pretty epic!

But if it doesn't have to be a band then Sufjan Stevens in the Olympia, May 2011 without a doubt, it was the greatest gig I've ever been to!

I'd probably go for Sufjan Stevens in the Olympia, 2011. But perhaps that is just because it is the most recent gig experience I've had.

Jurassic 5 in Vicar Street was memorable.

    Mind blowing! literally!!

Me too. I saw them twice back in the day. Genesis were an interesting live show too.

There's a huge difference between Best Band you've seen play live, and Best Live Band.

The best band I ever saw live depends on my mood ....

however the most enjoyable band to go and see is Crowded House, no question.

The first time I saw Radiohead, in the RDS the week after OK Computer was released, my life nearly flashed before me! Mindblowing stuff.

Richard Hawley in Vicar Street in 2008 (I think) was an amazing gig

If you want best gigs those two are definitely up there, along with Muse in the Point, Aussie Pink Floyd in the O2, U2 in Cork in 1987, Queen in Slane, and last but not least an Argentinian Queen tribute band called Dios Salve a la Reina (God Save The Queen) who I saw in Liverpool at a Beatles convention ;) They are so good, I forgot I was at a tribute band. I've seen them about six times now. The chap who is Freddie (impersonates is the wrong word) is staggering. His likeness, both in manner and physicality-wise is unnerving.

Obviously, but you can only speculate how good a band are live if you have never seen them live

Probably Rage against the Machine for performance, I didn't expect it to be that good. Other than that AC/DC, Machine head, Cancer Bats..... or The Prodigy.

    Foals are also Super :)

On a larger scale, Depeche Mode never dissappoint. 1st saw them in the point in december '93 and they blew me away(not literally of course)

    thats a relief!

most bands I have seen live have all been super tight and great live. I agree with a previous poster, depends on the mood. For example, I took great things out of seeing Anthrax, Asian Dub Foundation, and Down in the Ambassador, as I did out of seeing Jeff Lang on his own play to about 10 people upstairs in Dolans, Limerick, as I did to seeing Metallica in the round in the point in 96, (great gig, COC were particularly good that day), to seeing bands that worked well at festivals. I am trying to think of a band I saw that were really crap, and from the gigs I went to I can't think of any off the top of my head. At least , gigs I paid to go and see...

Some standouts: Wilco in Vicar Street, Sonic Youth in Vicar Street, Radiohead in Belfort France, 1997. John Butler Trio in the Olympia was savage. Powderfinger in the Pod. Explosions in the Sky - High Stool Limerick

    Standouts for me are:

Ryan Adams (solo) and any of The Cardinals shows
The Prodigy in the Olympia few years back
Kings of Leon (Witness and the Olympia)
Bruce Springsteen and the e street band
The Killers (in the early days)
    The Police.

    Muse at Wembley
Super Furry Animals headlining the new band stage at Oxegen even though they'd been around years
Manics (Olympia), Arcade Fire (O2), Daft Punk (Oxegen)

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band

Daft Punk - Oxegen 2007/8 (not sure which year it was).

That performance singlehandedly saved the entire festival from being woeful. It was my first time i've ever seen them live and i'm still waiting eagerly to see them again. They're the only band who would ever bring me to Oxegen again.

Gigs of the year so far are:
Sufjan Stevens in the Olympia (about a month ago. The thoughts of Impossible Soul live again just make me smile).
Owen Pallet in Whelans (monday just gone)
Fleet Foxes in Belfast (last weekend)

Dinosaur Jr in May 2010.J Mascis does spend the whole gig in a world of his own,but they're completely relentless when going through that back catalogue and I spent the next day in a daze,

Godspeed You! Black Emperor in Vicar Street last December.
I was left speachless after that gig. Unbelievable.

The smiths - less than ½-full, getting eyeballed by the manager for standing on a seat, heading home buzzing, and then having to explain who they were to the lads in school the next day!

It was brilliant alright. Tripod though, not Vicar Street.

Interpol at Oxegen about 4 or 5 years ago. I was really looking forward to seeing them and got up pretty close to the front, I heard they were good live but they blew me away that night. They were incredible and I never really liked Not Even Jail but they played it that night and it was unreal, it was amazing live. I just stood there staring at the stage listening to it with my mouth open, not dancing or singing just taking it in.

The National at EP last year and in the Olympia last year were brilliant live. Also special mention to The Flaming Lips at EP last year they put on an unbelievable show with all the balloons and streamers and lights.

This is one of my biggest gig going regrets. Myself and a friend were waiting for Daft Punk all day and we were at Klaxons before Daft Punk were up at a different stage but we had been up watching bands all day and we were bet down, soaking wet, my legs and back were in bits and we were staring to get annoyed by the whole sh*tty weather and we could'nt face going to stand around for another two hours so we headed back to our tents. The second we got back Daft Punk started playing and we could feel the base hitting us in the chest and we could hear the whole place going nuts. I sat in the tent listening to the whole gig thinking to myself why did'nt I just suck it up and stay there for them.:(:(

If they ever play in Ireland again I'll be there no hesitation.

was it the one in the green tent? best gig i've ever been to too. perfect acoustics, everyone in the crowd there to see them, and almost zero stopping to sh*te on inbtween songs. perfeck!

Neil Young on the Pyramid Stage in Glastonbury in 2009 was the most special gig I have seen - when he played Needle and the Damage Done the goosebumps raised the crowd off their feet. spiritual stuff, if music can do that.

honorable mention to radiohead/massive attack in rds 1997 - the day i finsihed my leaving cert :D

and damien dempsey anywhere will give you your moneys worth

Snow Patrol at Oxegen 2009, serious performance. Saw a lot of acts that year and Snow Patrol pretty much blew everyone else out of the water. An honourable mention has to go to Nightbox though.

Super Furry Animals - Vicar Street Oct 2007 - Racous performance, energetic fire in the eyes stuff. Crowd was immense!

Bob Dylan - Pearse Stadium June 27th 2004 - Was 2days before I turned 18th, first time getting very very drunk, sun was shinning, think Paddy Casey supported and was just chilled out and fun!

The Strokes - Oxegen 2006 - The beautiful sound of a whip crackin'! Julian arrived on stage stumblin witha bottle of wine in hand and the whole crowd in the other!

Roger Waters Dark Side of the Moon tour - The Marquee in Cork June 29th 2006 - First half Greatest hits set 2nd Half Dark side of the Moon in full... Probably the greatest gig Ive ever been to! Played 9 songs and the sound completley blew in the tent! Had to stop playing went off-stage for a good 30mins and had to re-sound check the whole venue was a nightmare... a nightmare worth having because once he came back he finished off the first half of the set then went straight into the Dark Side album front to back! Then whipped out a few more of the cliche which we love! Still get goosebumps thinking about it!

I've been going to gigs for longer than most here have been alive. Springsteen is easily the best I've seen, followed by Pearl Jam.

For me it would have to be Oasis and The Prodigy at Slane 2 years ago, was a bit too drunk at the time but it was still very good.

Second would be Green Day at Oxegen back in 2005, still liked their music back then and it was my first gig.
