Couple of questions about Die Hard

    Hi.
    [may contain spoilers]
Just watched Die Hard again (great film) but i found myself wondering about Hans Gruber's plan.

His objective was to steal 640 million worth of bearer bonds and get out of there safely.
To do this he takes 30 Nakatomi employees hostages and keeps the cops/FBI busy for a couple of hours.
    Fair enough.
What i don't really buy is his blowing up the building plan.

His stated motivation is "they won't come after us if they think we're dead and even if they do most of the evidence will be destroyed in the explosion".
    Is this really tenable.

Wouldn't selling on/cashing in bearer bonds somehow be traceable later.
Why did he assume all evidence would be destroyed in an explosion.
Why would he assume they would assume he was dead.
(Assuming they survived the explosion), destroying the buildings wouldn't change the fact they were surrounded; what exactly was his escape plan.
I dunno it seemed a bit facile (like he knew something the authorities wouldn't in the event of an explosion and therefore would easily outwit them).

Sorry if these are stupid questions.
    Humour me :pac:
    Thanks.

I always thought the fact that he was German was motivation enough.

    (with apologies to Germans)

TBH i ask because Die Hard is usually lauded for a certain degree of realism/absence of plotholes. I just wanted to make sure i wasn't missing something :pac:

Point of fact, The Germans, never fully think things through! They should have used 'Die Hard' as some sort of scape coat! With all the feckin fire power they had at their disposal they should have easily murdered his ass and made him look like the Oklahoma bomber or something :pac: and then........'be sitting on zee beach earning 20%' ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 796 ✭✭✭Johnnio13

    This is an easy one!
All the bearer bonds were only written down on paper..there was no computers back then of course!!:D

Blowing up the building would cause mass panic. There would be hundreds of emergency personnel at the scene. So all Hans has to do is set the explosion off from the ambulance he has in the underground parking lot and then drive away in the confusion shortly after.

Its actually not bad. Now that may be the result of the sheer joy of the movie but there is a noticeable improvement

Bingo, they blow up the top of the building with the hostages and transports/gunships on it, and "they'll spend months sifting through the rubble, by the time they figure out what went wrong, we'll be sitting on a beach, earning 20%".

How dare anyone question the iron claddness of this plan!! Only John McClane could throw a spanner big enough to upset this plan!

Blowing up buildings, I understand but personally, I still don't understand the whole 3 litre/5 litre water container thingy they were meant to do in Die Hard 3.

    Maths is hard.

That one took me ages to figure out. I finally did it though.

    Fill the 5l
Fill the 3l with the water from the 5l
Leaves you 2l in the 5l jug
    Empty the 3l
Pour the 2l from the 5l jug into the 3l
Leaves you 1l space left in the 3l jug.
    Fill the 5l jug again
Fill the rest of the 3l jug from the 5l = 1l
Leavs you with 4l in the 5l jug :)

I ****ing love the Die Hard movies. Im gonna sit down and watch 1-3 this weekend now:cool:

I'm not sure why people are berated just for offering an alternative opinion. Must admit I find it unnecessary and a bit silly seeing the insults that have been brandished in this thread because a user doesn't like Die Hard.

I agree with previous posts about it being the perfect Christmas movie. I'm always ready to watch it again when the holidays come around. Great fun watching Willis at his best.

Its all a bit tongue in cheek tbf, plus anyone who doesnt like Die Hard clearly has no soul, and possibly no reflection.

I hope that doesn't apply to the 4th in installment, I can't bring myself to like it.

This reminds me, I haven't watched Die Hard in years. And I mean years. Like probably 10+ years ago when I was doing my Junior Cert. *hangs head in shame*

Based on screenshots, the Blu-ray looks pretty good. No DNR! But it's obviously limited by the source material. I don't have it on DVD, so I'll probably pick it up after reading some reviews.

Can I be a real woman who watches Die Hard every Xmas and has the box set??

Also, Die Hard 5 set to come out 2012...can't decide if Bruce Willis is too old to make it work.

Bearer Bonds, suitably named as whoever is in possession of them is the owner. No records are kept.

    Nothing beats the first.
Incidentally his relationship with his wife Holly is intriguing in its reality (they're divorced as of the last film IIRC), eschewing the typical Hollywood romantic arc.
Because clearly the affection between the two is central throughout the series. Wonder is there yet to be a happy ending there.
Also, it's not dissimilar to his own real-life relationship with Moore.

    No, not traceable.

big explosions destroy stuff, have you any idea how many bodies were never recovered after 9/11 ? try most.
(Assuming they survived the explosion), destroying the buildings wouldn't change the fact they were surrounded; what exactly was his escape plan.
Drive away, the building blew up, people don't stay cool when skyscrapers collapse, check 9/11 vids
I dunno it seemed a bit facile (like he knew something the authorities wouldn't in the event of an explosion and therefore would easily outwit them).
he knew they's xxxx their pants, it was a good plan
