Underated players

Who do people think have been the most underated intercounty players? Padraic Davis from Longford was a fine player in his days but never really made the headlines, Declan Browne was another yes he won 2 All Stars but he should have got alot more. Tommy Doyle of the Kerry team of the 70's & 80's is more well know for the wrong reasons in 1982 but played everywhere from the half back to full forward line, won 7 All Irelands 3 All Stars but never got the credit he should have for what he did.

At the moment John Galvin is one up on till last year when he got a GPA award he never got the credit he should have.

In hurling a lot of lads from the so called weaker county's, Shane Brick & Christy Walsh from Kerry were as good as any player in there prime.
Don Hyland from Wicklow was a great player in his day, as were Paul Seevers from Sligo and Nicky Horan from Meath

Danny Culloty was a highly underrated player for Cork in the 80-90's

Browne was rated very highly. Matty Forde only picked up one All Star depsite being around for more or less the same length of time.

It's difficult to believe that Damien Fitzhenry only picked up two awards given his unreal displays over the years.

I always thought Michael Cordial of Offaly wasn't rated highly enough and the same with Ollie Moran of Limerick in hurling as well.

    Football
Peader Gardiner was always rated but I think not to the extent that he should be. I think he's one of the best wing-backs of the last decade.

Philip Greene from Sligo is one of the best goalkeepers in the country.

Paul Barden has always been underrated. Some people praise him but he's a wonderful forward, would get in any county team.

Niall McNamee is obviously highly acclaimed but I think he's better than Declan Browne and Mattie Forde ever were. One of the deadliest forwards from open play in the game.

Jamie Queeney from Meath is an underrated player imo.

Johnny McCarthy from Limerick is one of the best man markers in the game and John Galvin is arguably the best midfielder in the country but will never get the plaudits because he doesn't play for an All-Ireland challenging team.

I don't know if you'd call Pádraig Clancy underrated but I think people forget how good he really is sometimes.

From a Tipp perspective I would say Eamonn Corcoran was terribly under-rated as was Peter Lambert for our footballers. Bonner Maher is actually very under-rated also but I think people are beginning to come around to that - he has out-played both Tommy Walsh and John Gardner in he's last two championship matches, no mean feat considering they would be two of the best Wing Backs of the last 20 years.

Outside Tipp I think Gary Maguire and Shane Brick is/was very underrated.

Stephen Molumphy, many in Waterford cant see his true value. Dont know about in other counties. The man is a work horse.

    From Galway:

Footballers: Mike Meehan, one of the best in the country IMO, up there with B.Brogan just hasn't got the chance to prove it due to our woeful team the past few years.

Hurlers: Tony Og Regan, had a disastrous spell with us a few years back and was left out for a year or two.
I'd even admit myself to being one of the ones who hated seeing his name. Came on leaps and bounds last year picking up an All-Star nomination.

Hard to pick any from other county seeing less of them, and only the marquee players seem to stand out as I try to think.

Didn't rate Mark Brehony (Sligo) that highly until the Leitrim game this year, he started on the bench and they were hopeless when he came on he made a big difference.
Johnny Davey (Sligo) One of the best half backs in the country, would walk on to any intercounty team.
Seamus Scanlon (Kerry) Does a lot of ugly work around the middle third and doesn't get much credit
Kevin O'Neil (Mayo) Skillful and inteligent player, played a big part in Mayo reaching the '06 final.

It's only last year IIRC, got injured in the league and made a premature comeback in the championship.

He is rated, he would be one of the more prominent members of the squad, it's just I feel that although outsiders know him, they don't view him in the same light as Cooper or Brogan but I personally think he's just as effective(we've just underachieved and the main plaudits come from semis and finals which we haven't achieved since 2001)

I rate him. Not as highly as Cooper (who I think is head and shoulders above the rest), but as good as anyone else.

Good call - Galvin is a name I would have thought of as well.

For ourselves, I would nominate Ciaran McKeever - in my humble (and blinkered) opinion, the best number six in the country.

Hard to agree with you given that Tipp refused to play any ball down Tommy's wing in the 2010 final.

Kildare - Emmet Bolton & Alan Smith

Bonnar Maher for Tipp would have been ander-rated players - as premierstone said earlier on. I think however, if Tipp win the AI this year, he could well end up with an All-Star.

John Power for KK was the same type of player - willing to do the unfashionable job in order for the team to win.

Stephen Molumphy, when training full time and not off with the army, is another player who IMO is severly underated.

Whether you agree or not doesnt really alter the fact he scored 2 pts off Tommy and set up 1-3 for hes fellow forwards, the fact that there was no ball coming down that wing makes it even more impressive ;)

John Galvin of Limerick hands down. I know he won his place on the Opel team last year but how he's never won an all-star is ridiculous. Especially last year when even Jack O' Connor said he'd get on any team in the country.

    Dublin view

Seamus O'Hanlon of Louth one of the best footballers I have ever seen. Tony Hannon Wicklow, Padraig Davis Longford, Simon Rea Carlow.

Would have loved to see more of Declan Browne and Peter Lambert altough didnt Lambert win a All Ireland medal with Nemo Rangers?

Michael Meehan Galway I would disagree he does not get the credit. A blind man would see his talent

Niall Guiden and Mick Kennedy of Dublin done great work but never really got much credit.

Colm Coyle Meath, (despite his reputation) he could play anyposition from 2 TO 15.

On the hurling front Brian Mc Mahon of Dublin and Don Hyland Wicklow were both superb hurlers. John Taylor Laois

Galvin is not underrated. Anybody who knows anything about football knows that Galvin is one of the best midfielders in the country. And players like Michael Meehan, Seamus Scanlon and Niall McNamee are not underrated either. The number of All Stars won/naminated is no way to measure this.

Genuinely underrated players include Seamus Kenny and Graham Reilly from Meath, Dick Clerkin from Monaghan, Redmond Barry from Wexford and Ciaran Hyland of Wicklow. Kevin McKernan and Charlie Harrison are borderline underrated (ie. excellent players this is only starting to recognised).

    Currently Paddy Stapleton with Tipp.

Previously Timmy McCarthy of Cork looked ungainly but a great foil for the more cerebral forwards on that Cork team.

He did indeed, probably not as mobile as Declan but very skillfull

As Corkman it takes a little from the heart;) but I think Kerrys Bryan Sheehan is fine footballer and even though he maybe not that underrated I still think he better then what he gets.

    Andy Moran (Mayo)
    Matthew Clancy (Galway)

Conor Clancy on the Clare team of the 90s was vastly underrated, even within his own county. Noel Roche from Kilkee was a great football, played on numerous compromise rules teams in the 80s, it was great he got a Munster medal in 92.

definitley. if someone was to ask who Galways best player is, 99% of people would say Meehan. wouldnt consider him under rated whatsoever. People still talk of his performance in a losing game against Kerry 3 years ago. John Galvin is by far Limericks best player, and whilst they had some hopes of causing an upset this year, as soon as he got injured all the media and pundits said they were gone with his loss.

Same with McNamee. Offaly are half a team without him. Scanlon probably is under rated, but moreso due to his role in a dominating Kerry side.

    John Galvin definitely not under-rated.

A few players off the top of my head:

    Football

Niall McNamee (Offaly), Gary Hurney (Waterford), Tom O'Sullivan & Eoin Brosnan (Kerry), Derek Savage (Galway), 2 McNulty brothers & Francie Bellew (Armagh), Gary Connaughton and Ger Heavin (Westmeath), John Quane (Limerick), Joe Kavanagh and Stephen O Brien (Cork), Niall Guiden (Dublin), David Tubridy (Clare).

    Hurling

Kevin Murray and Ger Manley (Cork), Gary Kirby and Dave Clarke (Limerick), Conor Clancy and Stephen McNamara (Clare), Tom Fives, Stephen Molumphy and Peter Queally (Waterford), Rory McCarthy (Wexford), Michael Kavanagh, Andy Comerford, Eamon Morrissey, and Charlie Carter (Kilkenny), Brian O' Meara and David Kennedy (Tipp), Noel Sands (Down), Paul McKillen (Antrim), Brian Carroll (Offaly).

He has 4 all-stars, in all fairness.

I'd agree about Molumphy, I heard they put a tag on him that registered that he ran 18km in the munster final replay last year

Wouldn't agree about Hurney. He is talented no doubt but he's not the best on the Wateford team in my opinion. Maurice and Thomas O Gorman in my opinion would be more under rated. All three of em played for Munster though. Apparently, one of the former Munster managers said the two O Gormans would get on any other team in the country. That speaks volumes to me.
