Advice for unemployed graduate

Hi I was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice. I know I am not alone with my situation, but as I know no teachers I need some help from you lovely people!

So I graduated from UCD with my PGDE in 2010 with a 2.1 and a B in teaching. Subject combo isnt great- History and CSPE, but I have been applying for any job I can and have recently added a CELTA course to my CV. Iv sent letters to schools asking to work for free or work within special needs departments or extra curricular activities (I play the drums and other percussion instruments).

BAsically I think that I have a really good CV and degree behind me but absolutely no experience apart from a bit of subbing a couple of years back and my PGDE year. Has anyone else graduated and not gotten any work whatsoever? Has anyone any advice? Also moving to England is not an option for family reasons.

    Thanks!

What part of the country do you live? Maybe a teacher near you local area could give your CV to their principal. The Department has brought in new regulations so in future schools have to hire qualified teachers as subs. To get work as a sub you need to be in easy distance of a school so that if you get a call at 8.55pm that someone is ill, you have to get into school asap! Well thats my experience of sub work.
Make face to face contact with principals in your local school - From next week on things are less hectic on schools and you should try to personally meet and hand in your CV to local schools.

Thanks for the reply. I'm down as a sub for a couple of schools near me (I live in south Dublin) but I haven't been caled once this year. Also when handing in Cvs I always ask to speak to a principal or vice but they're always busy. If I do persist I feel Im just being annoying. I'm planning to go around to schools again in the next couple of weeks.

Principals and deputies are really busy these days so that's understandable. I'd advise you to ask the secretary (nicely) if she/he could make an appointment for you to come back and see the Principal. Say that you are looking for sub work, live close by, are reliable and can be in the building within x mins of a phone call. A lot of schools have a nightmare with supervision so the secretary might be on the lookout for someone reliable. Good luck.:)
