    Hi there,
Sorry if this has been done before, but whats the story with the cost of
    events??
I was just looking to enter the Dingle Half Marathon, but the price of 45euro,and 55 euro if you dont register in the next 10 days ( whats that about?), has put me right off it.
I hope I'm not sounding cheap but I just dont understand how events can
    cost so much?

    Mr.W.

That's cheap compared to what I paid for the Dingle half in it's first year. €70 in 2009 IIRC.

If you think something is to pricey don't do it. Look for a cheaper alternative and do that.

IMHO value for money should be the main criteria when choosing your race.

I have never ran Dingle so can't comment on it but in general a lot of half's are the main bread winners for organisers, especially those that are run in conjunction with full marathons.

Most of them are not worth the circa €40 price that they charge.

Have a look at this boring thread...

You should really be looking for at what bang you get for your buck rather the the actual cost.

Anyway there are a lot of halfs on in September (build up to Dublin) so a bit more research in the events sub forum may yield you some alternatives.

€20 for the Cork half-marathon on Sun Sept 11th as far as I know, not sure if the half marathon is on in Clonmel this year but it was €25 last year (in Aug).

I actually thought it was interesting. With over 60 replies, probably more than 95% of the threads in this forum, and with nearly 3,000 views I'd imagine I'm not the only one.

........but its about triathlon costs not road race costs so I suspect it's of no interest to most of the people who post or visit this forum.

The thread has still generated more interest than most threads in this forum. Why give a link to it if it wouldn't be of interest? All I was saying is that it wasn't boring to me and obviously a lot of other people here, whether they care about triathlon costs or not.
There is talk about an Athenry 10km race in the thread as well as other road races around Galway. Some runners must have read it. People whose sole interest I would have thought was running, have posted in it as well. Your suspicion that 'it's of no interest to most of the people who post or visit this forum', differs to mine.
No doubt most of the posters here are runners, but it's called the Athletics/Running/Triathlon forum and triathletes are, I'm sure, a sizeable minority.

I never really had much of an issue with the prices in Ireland, but there are way more cheap races available to do in the UK. But, there are no t-shirts or goody bags or chip timing on all the cheap races. Best value I had was a couple of weeks ago with a race for £2, and they had Jaffa Cakes at the finish.

I was a bit surprised by people over here complaining about the price of a couple of races recently, where there was t-shirts, goody bags, and chip timing. The price they were complaining about being expensive was only £28 though.

    *groan*

Do we really need yet another thread on a subject that has been debated to death several times already?

    Connemara, Dingle, Bay Run ...

But everybody's not all grizzled old-timers like us - a lot of newcomers haven't had the chance to debate the issues before.

Difficult to think of a new subject under the sun actually...

As another poster said look for a cheaper alternative, the national half marathon is on in Waterford same weekend, think it was 20 euro entry last year.

The price difference between uk and irish races is staggering. £2 cheaper per race if your in a club too, great idea, gets more people to join clubs, raising the overall standard.

I turn up to the majority of club training evenings, but some races I turn up at the majority of people there in my clubs vest I may never have seen before. I think they must have joined in order to get the cheaper race entry, if they have actually paid their yearly subs after the first year and getting the free club vest or not is another matter.

Fair enough, sorry. I know it wasn't you, but I don't think the original comment about the 'boring thread' was though. Or maybe sarcasm is just too hard for me to detect on the Internet, with people I don't know.
