Leave from job

Wroking away, but hoping to to go back to college and do a Masters.

Don't want to commit to two years (part-time), so to do one full-time I'd have to take leave from September to June.

I'll be 7 years in the job in September. Does anyone have experience of this and how did they approach it with their employer?

The Masters is in the same field I work in and definitely qualifies as 'upskilling', not a change of direction.

My obvious fear is to be told yes and then come back to find that 'circusmtances have changed' and my job is no longer there in a year, or be taken back on greatly reduced terms.

Or I could just be told no and then have a big decision to make. Could it also have implications for my service, as in, would it be regarded as a 'break' in service.

Any advice/experience would be greatly appreciated.
