How long should a dishwasher last?

Bought an integrated Bosch dishwasher for about €600 four and a half years ago. It recently stopped working so I had to get the makers out to look at it. Engineer advised that the motor is gone and as its out of warranty it will cost 300 plus vat  to fix.

Gets used twice to three times a week and everything is always rinsed before being placed in dishwasher. Only gets run at 35 degrees and water in the area isnt too hard.

Filters always maintained clear and salt levels kept topped up whenever required.

Just checking in to see if I am off my rocker or whether appliances should last a little longer when you fork out so much for them. Otherwise I may as well just replace it with a cheapo brand.

I'm not sure how long they 'should' last but ours is over 9 years old and is used pretty much every day and hasn't given any problems.
It's a Neff, which was expensive though.

It should definitely last longer than that. I got a siemens in 2003 and with 4 kids it was used at least once a day. It only gave up a few weeks ago. That is 8 years and I thought it should have lasted longer.

We have a 12 year old bosch classixx maxx freedom performance slimline dishwasher. We use it every night and it has not needed any parts and still works perfect. Cost £275.00 then.

I would say you are unlucky to only get 4.5 years:(

We had one, lasted some 15 years. This was back in the day that things were built to last, of course. The old man has a microwave that we bought back in '85. Works perfect.

Nowadays everything has built in obsolesence (sic?). You go and buy something new and the staff are more interested in selling you insurance. Should it fail. Which it inevitably does.

Price competition has caused the manufacturing standards of most appliances to drop. If people are prepared to bypass the older brands and purchase cheap equivalents from further and further away then the older manufacturers have the choice of either going out of business or reduce their standards and try to sell cheaper than before. The third option is to offload the business as Philips did with their white goods business (to Whirlpool) in 1990 and more recently their TV business which is now for sale.

Get an independant appliance repair guy to look at it you may get a cheaper price. 300 is too much you would get a new one for that go for one with a 5yr part gaurantee if you can.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions :)

Tried a local independent guy in Portmarnock and he felt that four years wasnt too bad and that I would be better off just buying a new one from him as his call out charges would be about €80 plus any parts and labour in excess of one hour if needed. Tempted to just go up to the north with a friend that has a van who does regular trips. I would definitely get a new one cheaper but despite wanting to support local shops and businesses its getting harder and harder to justify it :(

Rang Bosch who pretty much said 2 year warranty is up and best they are prepared to do is to credit the €89 call out against the cost of a new unit from them (seems like this may be the best option unfortunately).

in fairness to Bosch that is decent as they have no obligation to do anything for you outside of the warranty.
there are no bargains up north anymore.
there are great deals on appliances in power city etc now or try baize house in glasnevin for damaged stock

Guess they must have read your post .... called them this morning to order a new dishwasher and they said that there must have been an error and they will not credit this amount but could resend the engineer to install a new motor at the quoted price. Obviously not even going there ....

Thanks for the info all. Will be more reluctant to pay for the perception of premium brands in relation to white goods in future.

Lol im in the same boat. All my kitchen appliances are conspiring against me all at the same time.My 3 1/2 yr old Hotpoint washing machine has given up the ghost after minimal (once or twice a week) use. The dishwasher also only works on the "Intensive" cycle. My fridge freezer was my own fault though (freezers dont like to be defrosted by a hammer and chisel) :D

Ive been looking at this crowd the last while and am tempted by their prices, although some of their stuff is reconditioned. If im only getting 3 and a bit years out of brand new appliances, spending half the amount on reconditioned appliances doesnt look too bad and they do warranties.

very surprised if the washing machine gave up the ghost -only thing that gives major fault on them is the eeprom sometimes needs reprogramming -like most electronic machines that flash lights (fault sequence) engineers (?) cant read them and normally announce that the board is gone cheaper to replace and relieve you of a call out charge -your machine is scraped and usually ends up in the reconditioned shop because the delivery drivers sell them on

My one has lasted nearly 5 years, she complains all the time but she gets the job done :D

Seriously though we have a zanussi and live in a very hard water area, we have to use a filter for our water for the kettle otherwise we would have to replace that every couple of weeks. The dishwasher is used almost everyday and no problems so far.

My parents one lasted 18/19 years. Don't know what type but it was used on average 4 or 5 times a week.

The good lady and myself recently bought a house so had to go on the hunt for appliances. We ended up at Harvey Normans and the fridge, washing machine and dishwasher all had 5 year guarantees (which we stupidly didn't apply for). So decent guarantees can still be had OP.
