any owners or former owners out there ? Considering buying a 2007-08 1.8 petrol (or C180 kompressor) but my wifes friend, who owns one, says they go through a cruel amount of petrol, she does mostly urban driving which I also mostly do. Can anyone confirm this, somehow I couldn't imagine a 1.8 being all that bad.

Anyone you ask about a car of this size at the moment will say its very heavy on juice. Most are basing that on the fact that they put in 20 euro and it really goes nowhere. That same 20 euro 2 or three years ago would have given them many more miles.... nothing to do with the car. I had a c180 , the auto are much the classier car but will be a bit more juicy. Expect to get around 30 to 35 mpg for outside of town and in the city if its auto 25mpg :p

I used to have a CLK230.. I reckon that was getting about 25 on average, maybe 30 on a run. You only want an auto - don't get a manual.

Brother in law has a C180 Komp. and i drove the car to Donegal and back last year. It is no better or worse that your average 1.8 to 2.0l family petrol car. I think I got about 35+ mpg. I was pleasantly surprised when I had to put petrol in at the end of the trip - as I expected it to rob me blind, which it did not.

Edit: I have an E200 and I get about 33 to 35 average.

    More powerful turbo.

The C180, C200 and E200 have the same engine block (four cylinder 1,796 c.c.) but the C200 and E200 have a more powerful turbo than the C180.

Thanks evrybody for your replies. Si_guru states above that I should not get a manual, can he or anybody please tell me why, I have driven manuals all my life (20 years driving now) and that would probably be my preference.

    Thanks

i'm open to correction on this but from shopping around for my last car i found that manual benz's don't hold their value or sell as quickly as auto's. Same as leather vs cloth interior

You certainly would struggle to find a buyer for an E class manual but less so with the C180. The same goes for cloth vs. leather, not such a big deal on the C class.

Proportionally, auto and leather cost more on a C class than on an E so as a % of the total stock there's a lot more manuals and cloth interiors out there when you look at the C class, especially the entry level C180.

Unscientific survey just now on carzone.... I specified C class between 2005 and 2006, there are 42 manuals and 69 autos.

Generally it is felt that the auto box is much smoother and the more preferred option in mercs !:)

On the manual v. auto question..........

When road tax was based on c.c. it didn't matter whether the car was manual or auto but it does matter for cars that are taxed based on emissions and in this class of vehicle it's virtually impossible to get an auto below band D.

Over the past few years I was toying with the notion of buying a new 320i, A4 or C180, I found that adding automatic always pushed the car into the next VRT band which meant that in the case of the 320i the auto gearbox effectively cost almost 5K  because the metallic paint and other extras were suddenly costing more because the car was now in the higher VRT band.

As you're buying 2ndhand you don't have to deal directly with this issue but bear in mind that the emissions class will determine the annual road tax.

Update to my 'survey' (see my earlier post) based on 2007-2008 C180s for sale on carzone: 23 manuals and 47 automatics.
