    Hello All,

I am new to woodworking, and have recently built a woodworking bench and fited a 9" babco vice. I am wondering if anyone has any recommendations on what type of wood to use on the inside of the vise jaws which will not dent other wood pieces when in the vice?

If your new to the whole thing try using mdf or ply 18mm so you wont be to sad when you hack them to pieces. If your handy enough go for beech 25mm thick they will last. Some people use softwoods because it can be spongier but IMO it doesnt hold as well:D

I generally us 6mm ply or mdf on the vice faces. Because I'm mean and I don't want to reduce the clamping capacity. But I probably should use something thicker.
It might be worthwhile thinking about adapting the vice and bench to accept bench dogs, at this stage. It's something I've got to do myself :)
