I have about €1500 to spend on a car. It must be diesel, sporty, and newer than 2000 with less than 150K miles. Any reccomendations?

the bangernomics thread tip= spot on

the other bit is utter rubbish! What a stupid thing to say. If you tried to fulfill all of the criteria perfectly then yes, but there are plenty of €1500 cars that will do the job for many years once maintained (something Irish people seem to always forget you need to do with cars)

OP if you pushed that budget out a bit you could get a reasonably decent bmw 525tds for example, not really "sporty" but nice looking cars and a bit of flash if you get the right one.

Its hard to find a sporty diesel less than €1500...if your budget can stretch id recommend a BMW 320d 2001...however and thats a big however...make sure its a mechanically sound car should you go for one....my mother has been rightly caught with her one....or try this

Um... so you want to buy a 10 year old sporty diesel with a **** load of miles on a limited budget?

Seems very likely to me that you'll spend another 1500 on the thing by the time a year is out.

The car you choose is likely to have had 3 owners by now, all of whom might have done a lot (diesel) of aggressive (sporty) driving. Potentially on crap roads. If any of the 2nd or 3rd owners didn't look after this thing then you're probably going to eat the cost of those bad years.

Maybe I'm being unfair, but I'm guessing you won't be maintaining it yourself. Presumably if you were that into cars you'd have no problem picking something out to meet your criteria.

If I was to sacrifice anything out of your criteria I'd get me a petrol for the money.

Ya absolutley...i think diesel, newer than 2000..and possibly <200k miles....sporty is doubtful and would be lucky.....if your not going sporty...go a skoda octavia...they are a very very good car :)

I saw a 2000 TDI Octavia going for 2500 and it was an ex taxi with 220k miles. Dont think he'll get a diesel octy for 1500 (awaits to be proven wrong!)

Ok theres alot of big engines there, suppose I'd better clarify. What I meant by sporty obviously isnt to most people here, 1.9 tdi would be sporty to me pretty much anything over 115BHP.

At the minute I drive a 4x4, its got good acceleration and is good fun but is really uncomfortable to drive on bendy roads or on the motorway. I drive a truck out of Dublin every week but to get to work I have to drive from Roscommon, its less than a 2 hour commute but its boring as hell.

I'm looking for something where I only have to fill the tank once a week, is comfortable on the motorway but is still abit of fun on the country roads because I like driving.

I'm not looking for anything flash like a merc or bmw (even a 10 year old one) but something with a few extras would be nice. I know reliability is never guaranteed on a 10 year old car but as far as possible I'd like to avoid fiats and opels.

I was looking at some 2l tdci mondeos when I stumbeled on a Peugeot 406 coupe by accident which I'm looking at later in the week. I would never have thought to look for one but its a car I really liked when it came out.
I know my cars but I'm not an expert I'm just looking for some out of the box thinking from people that are more seroius petrolheads than me.
