I see Aldi have a saorview set top box for sale this week for €80.

How does this compare to the official saorview boxes on sale? Is it a good one? Thanks

If it's certified as saorview compliant then surely it's an "official" one?

How old is your TV? Most sold in the last few years can receive digital through the aerial with no upgrade.

I wouldn't be in a huge hurry for a box yet anyway, the switch-off is a while away and the prices will probably get below 50 quid at times. Also I'd hold out for a HD one.

It's not in the list of approved Saorview boxes, though it wouldn't be allowed to carry the logo if it wasn't. So maybe the Saorview site is out of date.

Doesn't appear to be a particularly special deal tbh. Although the LIDL site doesn't say it, the box has USB written on the front, which leads me to believe that it's also a DVR. But you'd want to get in and read the box before buying.

There's a comparable box available in powercity for the same price.

To be fair, it is decribed as "Irish HD Freeview television receiver".
Is it not also able to output HD ?

    I've got this TV :

I've hooked it up to our attic aerial (from which we used to receive uhf/vhf terrestrial stuff before going with Sky some time ago).

I can't seem to get it to tune to these new channels on saorview.
    I'm in Claremorris/Kiltimagh area.

Does it require a specific type of aerial ?
Or .. am I outside the area covered by Saorview at the moment ?

    Update on my JVC TV.
I managed to work out the tuning instructions.
However, now I have all the channels, the TV channels are just putting out audio against a blank/black screen ??

Your TV is unfortunately not capable of receiving the Soarview signal. Blank screen with audio is an indicator that your TV is MPEG2 compatible, but not the MPEG-4 required by Saorview.

You'll need a set-top box to get Saorview on your TV.

For €7 more and no ALDI queueing grief - This guy seems a way better option - also has a scart output so need for a HD TV (yet)

    http://www.tvtrade.ie/saorview-set-top-box-receiver.html

but also has a built in media player with USB connection (so you can add a PVR/hard drive (its says its already enabled for pause/rewind)

It's not €7 more as the price quoted is ex vat. The full price appears to be €104.97, and in addition to that, you have to pay delivery of €7.50 plus vat. It must be approx €33 more than Aldi's €80.

Does this box just plug into the aerial? We have a digital tv and last year (bout this time last year actually) we were able to pick up the digital rte tv channels and the radio channels. About a motnth later they disappeared and we have not been able to get them since. Would there be any point getting this box if the tv cant pick them up?

Would have been mt leinster we were picking the signal up from (i think, south kilkenny, near new ross).
