Why do they only start this station at 9:00am, do they not realise that their target audience would be up a couple of hours already and tuned in to cebeebies by the time RTE jnr starts, The RTE jnr block of programming that this simulcasts starts at 6:45am which would seem like a more natural start time especially since the other channel its time sharing with ended at 01:00am.

Now another thing that annoys me about this channel is why they directly simulcast RTE2's programming, if they are going to start it at 9:00am why don't they start it with a time shifted rte2 so that it is not the exact same as the output on RTE2, ie RTE 2 starts at 6:45 with barney so RTE jnr should start with that at 9:00 thefore being at least 2 hours behind RTE 2 giving a bit more choice.

The plan for the channel when submitted to the Dept last year was that it would start at 11:00 with a 2 hr delay from the RTÉ2 jr stream and the only taking the 0900-1200 slice of programming and repeating it until shutdown.

This is Phase 1 of the channel.

Phase 2, planned for next May (2012) includes a 0700 start with a different schedule to RTÉ2, at that time RTÉ2 jr stream will end at 1100.

Yeah that would make more sense, also they could now make the RTE2 childrens output suitable for a slightly older child similar to CBBC, especially during the school holidays. Ideally what I would like to see from RTE jr is a mixture of programming from RTE and TG4 are even a dedicated Irish language children's channel,

Why is RTEJr and RTE1+1 two different channels. Since one ends before 7PM and the other starts at 7PM, wouldn't it make sense for the two to share the same bandwidth and leave open another channel available for something else, although RTE probably can't afford anything else.

i think its only temporarily Time-sharing, and they hope to have programmes on RTE 1+1 all day. I'm not sure where I read that.

Who knows what the schedulers at RTE think! They continue to show Euronews at the same time on both RTE1 and 2 overnight. I know it's overnight, but still!

I don't buy the phase 1 idea either. Put the programmes on at a time when children are going to be watching them. That means from 6am not 7. Keep all of the programmes on one channel.

RTE needs to up it's game on home grown children's programmes too. Still far too much American programming for younger audiences. It's not good enough!

They do timeshare the same video stream (bandwidth), just different VPIDs and different service IDs (channels). Discussed here recently. No further capacity on Mux 1 to launch any other services.

It's not temporary. The present configuration was approved by the Dept of Comms last Feb. Any change to that would require further consultation and approval.

The present lineup is approved until mid 2014.

would the timesharing channel startup and changeover be totally automated or would there be manual user input. Just trying to understand why they chose to start it at 9AM,

Also just realised looking through the EPG that RTEjr is only on Monday to Friday, not broadcasting at all on Saturday or Sunday, now I know that RTE2's schedule is different on weekends but why can't they just repeat say Mondays schedule again just so not to have an empty station. Or even have RTE 1+1 going all day. It all seems to be done very slapdash and a little bit of forethought would have made much better use of the capacity available.

There are plenty of models they could replicate. All children's channels follow an automated loop.

CITV shows younger programmes from 8.45am til 3pm each day with older programmes from 6am and until 6pm.

With the mix swopped around at the weekends. Perhaps RTE hasn't got the back catalogue of programming yet.

I think RTÉjr block starts on RTÉ2 at 0900.

You should read the proposal from RTÉ last Nov - http://www.dcenr.gov.ie/NR/rdonlyres/C13536EC-C703-4110-9A07-2A5DB4107DE3/0/PVTConsultationDocument.pdf
