Cheap Filters

    Hello all,

As the summers coming in, I've more free time for my photography. In particular, I want to get into more landscapes. I've dusted off the old Cokin filters and have already had some great fun with them. However, some other filters I'd like to buy tend to be a tad pricey.

I've found some really cheap filters online, but am wondering what am I losing in quality for paying that price. For example:

A Hoya UV filter in town (for an 82mm ring) costs about 50quid - online an unnamed brand would set me back only a fiver. That's a tenth of the price, but surely there can't be ten times the difference for a UV filter? Right?

Similarly, a circular polarising filter is only 8 quid online, in Dublin I can't even get them on the shelves, but they would be over ten times the price if I were to ask for them to be order in.

Essentially what I'm asking what justifies the massive price difference in these filters? And can it be justified?

    Cheers!

Picked some up cheep over in Lanzarotte to see what they were like - and the quality is absolutely HORRID! Way too soft, and doens't give a nice image at all. :(

cheap filters are exactly what they say on the tin. cheap. You might as well cut the base off a milk bottle and colour it with a highlighter ... Jessops are brutal stick to the trusted brands, Hoya, B&W, Nikon. I am sure there are more reputable ones. Avoid Jessops own brand = milk bottles!!
