Well i was sort of conned after getting a set of alloys with some nice Toyo Proxes on all 4 and all looked 90% thread but one was deflated at the time so i thought nothing of it as i was told they had been lying up for some time.

So pumped it up yesterday and noticed a serious of bulges along the inner side of the tyre when fully inflated, like a rash!!

Is it finito,as it is still excellent thread over the whole tyre bar this and seem an awful waste of an expensive tyre and it is a 19 inch .

Lets just say the seller told me he had a GTO!

Bulging on the sidewall of a tyre means the tyre is dead, from what I know.

Tyre fit for the bin and dangerous to drive on.

 at the GTO comment, what do you drive btw?

sounds like it was ran on flat if it is multiple bulges. one bulge and it needs to go.

    Doesn't sound good:(

How big are the bulges? are there several or just a few big ones?
What condition is the rim in?
At best the tire might not be sitting properly on the rim, hence the bulges.
    More likely its shagged...

As above, dont chance it. Its not worth your life having a blowout. for the sake of a few quid.

Bulges are spots where the steel (or whatever metal) reinforcement bands in the sidewall have snapped, allowing the rubber to naturally take whatever pressurised shape it wants.

Was in the NCT center the other day and someone failed on the same thing, bulges on inside wall they where not at all aware of. Occasionally I kinda like the NCT for this sort of stuff. :P

Bulges in tyres, especially low profile tyres, only do one thing eventually....blow out.

Tyres are for the bin unfortunatly.

Get them changed ASAP! I had a blow out years ago and ended up in a ditch!

Is this a thing with older tyres? What date is on the tyres?

It would be very rare for a side wall bulge to have anything to do with the age of the tyre. Bulging is caused by impacts or similar damage.

Surely you don't intend using the tyres that suited the GTO on a Civic?

    Ok, thought it might, cheers.

Or in my case my missus hitting every kerb around the place :)

Had to change hers last Saturday. Better safe than sorry, you don't want to crash due to a blow out especially when you know you have bulge in your tire.

You life is probably worth more that 100 euro ;)

I do well 3 of them now for the moment.

I was after the alloys and the tyres came as a bonus and i got lucky with the Pcd and stud were all perfect for my Hrv,i got a good deal even though one is fecked.

    A pic or two-

    tyres002small.jpg

Tbh most of the wall looks unsafe near the worse part of the bulge, like the whole wall has moved.

Might be best to plant something in or give it the daughter for the tree in the field :).

what about rips there's one on a tyre I have its like someone gouged a piece of rubber out of the tyre. Should I change it, I've the NCT in two weeks...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,786 ✭✭✭slimjimmc

    Yes
Cuts / rips are not a good thing to have on a side wall. And you've got to ask yourself what caused the rips, and could it have done other internal damage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,190 ✭✭✭sundodger5

depends on the cut if you can see the cords of the tyre, these are the bits that reinforce the rubber as per posts above, it should go.
if it does not and no bulge then it is ok.

I got nailed for a bulge in the outer wall on my last NCT - the smallest bulge I've ever seen and I did have to struggle to notice it. Glad somebody did notice though, binned the tyre and got a new one :)

Dunno about that to be honest, the sidewall structure could still be weakened substantially even though there is no bulge.

Its more of a surface wound on the tire, no threads or buldge, if there was a buldge I'd replace as normal, but its not that deep.

Anyone know where to pick up some decent part worns looking for 4 x 18/40/225

That is the law/regulations regarding that type of damage.
however if you feel more comfortable changing it then by all means do so but it is not necessary.
