Bank Passbook

Do any banks still issue bank pass books? (the type they update each time you make a deposit or a withdrawal)?

My father wants to open a new account and does not trust those "new fangled internet" type accounts.

    Thanks
    Max

Only places I'm aware of that still have those are An Post and the Credit Union. Does it need to be a current account?

His account would still be managed by computer no matter what. There is nothing stopping you from keeping your own parallel accounts in either case.

I was presuming it's more likely an issue of having a record to hand of the balance or transactions rather than not wanting records held on computer. If it is the latter then I'd say other than a biscuit tin under the bed, he'd be out of luck. But as you say, the only alternative with a bank would be to keep your own record.

He was looking for an old fashioned bank book, which the teller puts into the machine when he makes a deposit or withdrawal. He has no problem having his details held on computer he just does not want to use internet banking.

I was doubtful he would be able to get one. Thanks.

EBS still do these deposit books. Obviously the record is still backed up on a main frame somewhere as I do a lot of on line banking and the book is updated if I go into a branch for anything.

However, this may change now that EBS is part of AIB. I know when Irish Permanent and TSB Bank merged to become PermanentTSB the Irish Permanent account holders held onto their deposit books but any new accounts opened in PTSB were just given an account number and the Internet Banking option. The older Irish Permanent customers were "gently coaxed" off the deposit books but a fair few would not give them so PermanentTSB still have an old legacy system to accomadate the minority who retain the Irish Permanent passbook.

So, my advise to you would be to get your father to open an EBS account quick before they stop issuing them now that they are part of the AIB Group.

Can he get a blank one anywhere that he could fill in himself? Maybe I will try Easons for him.
