I have recently bought a Scrollsaw, and completed 4 small projects. I am presently researching best approach to making frames, ie similar to picture frames. I reckon I need a router with table, but the cost and the fact that it would not be used very much, puts me off. I get the impression that there are not many wood craft enthusiasts in Ireland, its a pity, as it would be great to swap ideas.

Yes I agree you would need a router and a table it makes it so much easier . Don't give up on the table and router you can pick them at a good price from time to time on adverts .ie and buy and sell and done deal every now and then. The scroll saw it a great piece of kit you can do so much with them.I have done some scroll saw projects myself and they turned very good . Well I was pleased with them lol.
There are a large number of wood crafters out there all over the country working from the back of their houses ,I Know that because I have met a lot of them over the years .
I would like to set up a meeting with some of these guys to swap ideas as you say .What do you think?

Woodturner here also, make bowls and jewellery. Working on a small amboyna burl bowl at the moment. Pure bliss!

Nice, I love the smell of Amboyna burl. Where did you get it?

Ordered it from the states, cost an arm and a leg. Can't find anywhere here that sells it. It does smell divine alright

Have you ever tried Buckeye Burl? Beautiful looking wood too.

I've seen it yeah but not in person, love the crazy colours that it can have. Most burls are amazing really. Have some mallee burl I made into a small bowl a while back. Turning burls is hard work, such tough tight knit grain but so worth it when you sand it and apply your finish. Stuff just pops

A friend of mine is a carpenter and he made half of his furniture himself.
    Really impressive and beautiful.

Nothing as nice as having the skill to build your own furniture ,it gives you a great buzz when finished .I buld some furniture over the years from native timber ,from spalted beech ,elm etc what lovely colours . I then drifted into making furniture from tree branches in the raw state ,used to store them for a year or so and then worked on them ,they turned out really good very different .

    Hi
Anyone out there tried "wood Intarsia" ?
You don't need many tools .

Its difficult to obtain 6mm hardwoods in Ireland, which I think is needed for a lot of intarsia designs. There's no problem getting much thicker hardwoods, but unless you have the means to slice them to thin wafers, its an obstacle to getting started. Would love to give it a go, so would love to hear from anybody out there who has any ideas. I have since got a Belt & Disc Sander and Drill on Drill Stand, and am trying to figure out how to clamp wood onto Drill Stand so it does not move when using a Forstner Bit. I think I may need to make a Drill Stand Table, so am looking for a good design. The Drill Stand Vice seems more suitable for metal work. Even the Drill stand table will need clamps, anybody familiar with Bench Hold Down Clamps !

you could get 2mm veneer and maybe glue 3 sheets together?

The wood I use is about 15ml to 25ml !
I have even used old shelving and logs cut to size on a bench saw.
But I would like to find a wood supplier for it.
A belt sander is agreat help for shaping,, and a dremil or the like!!!
    D0 you have a scrollsaw?

Recently took up woodcarving. Currently just trying to get the hang of the chisels and knives. Ultimately I want to do carving in the round but so far just experimenting with relief stuff.

I'm learning woodturning. Have the use of a lathe that belonged to a neighbour who sadly died. His widow glad that the machine is not rusting in the shed. I'm having fierce trouble getting the hang of sharpening the chisels.

Sharpening is something that really comes with time, it's a right pain in the arse to be honest. You can construct or buy sharpening jigs to make it easier but nothing beats practicing.

    Hi Folks,

I'm looking for a portable, authentic looking casing for my digital piano/keyboard.

I've found a site in the states that supplies these but I would expect them to be very expensive and to take forever and a day to get here.

would anyone in the wood craft area be able to recommend/suggest if someone could make one of these?

Something like these would be great.
