Rear molar extrqaction under GA

    Afternoon all,

I have had on going issues with a molar.
It was chipped and fillings keep falling off.
The dentist said during my last visit that it may need a root canal.

The filling has just fallen off again and the remaining tooth is hyper sensitive now.

Any work I have had on this tooth has been extruciating and I cannot face it again.

Can any one advise where I can get it removed under general anasthetic?

I have read of sedatives being used with local anasthetic. Is this essentially the same thing?

    Please help.

    Wavey.

If you have had "excruciating" pain while getting treatment you need to change dentist. I have had root canal on a split and crowned rear molar, and while it was uncomfortable, there was no pain.

    Hey there,
Essentially for a quick procedure such as the removal of one molar- iv sedation is as good as or even better than a ga.
It is quicker, has a far quicker recovery period with less/no post op nausea etc. It is cheaper too:)

I don't think the dentist is doing anything wrong.
Any other tooth she has worked on has been fine.

    Hi OS,

    I missed your post.
I have an appointment with my regular dentist on Thursday to assess the tooth and look at options.

I'm not sure whether to go for GA or sedation.

How long does either procesure last?
I presume I cant drive for quite a while after either?

    Thanks for your help.

    Wavey.

    Hey wavey,
For ga, a patient is generally in hospital for 6-8 hours or so but depends on the hospital and in what sequence the operator does the list... For iv sedation, the patient is usually in and out in 1.5 hours or so.
For both- you should not drive home.
