Channel 426, 3D is a gimmick in my view and wont be around in a couple of years, I really hope this isnt 1 of the new 5 channels, its split into to 2 screens showing the same thing, this sort of crap from UPC doesnt surprise me.

A 3D TV joins up these pictures.

Not sure what the deal is with what packages its on but i have it on the max HD package through cable.

I would of much preferred they gave us either Rte 2, Utv, Channel 4 or Sky 1 in HD than this, im never buying a 3D tv nor will i ever sit down wearing a stupid pair of glasses to watch it either, its a waste of channel space.

I remember people saying HD was a waste of time.

If people like you had the final say we would still be in black and white with 405 lines.:D

Now get out there and buy a 3D TV.

Edit I guess this girl is not for youavatar-navi-blue-photo11261373623.jpg

Just got a new TV, which happened to have 3D built in. (Samsung D8000) I'm not overly fond of 3D at the cinema but at home the quality of the 3D is great!

I'm only on UPC's basic package and Eurosport 3D isn't part of the package. I'm not a sports fan at all but it's nice to see UPC adding some 3D channels, lots of 3D TV's will be sold going forward and will cause a lot of people to upgrade to this UPC package.

The only way 3D will catch on is if you can watch it without the glasses, which in a few years maybe possible.

The only programme on Eurosport in 3D is the Tennis from France.

Apart from a few movies(which Sky has exclusive rights to) and some live sport on Sky are there any other source of 3D TV ?

The cost of 3D TVs is too high at the moment and I don't see any increase in demand on the horizon.

UPC - I don't see a mad rush for the HD package just to get Eurosport 3D !

Tour de France was also shot in 3D last year on Eurosport, according to one of the commentators who saw some of the live feed. He reckonded it was amazing - as he would :)

I don't see what the problem is. Is the general consensus here that UPC shouldn't add Eurosport 3D and instead get other channels? What about their customers that do have 3D televisions.

ITV channels were taken from UPC. It's not like UPC decided they did not want them any more.

I'm sure it's not as simple as "we want to add this, this and this".

From shopping around for a TV a few months ago, it appears that most of the major manufacturers are phasing out their standard HD sitting-room-class TVs (> 30") and Blu-Ray players and making the entire ranges 3D compatible. Many technologies' successes aren't down to people seeking them out, but due to them being bundled with more accepted technologies to the point that you won't be able to buy a TV without 3D unless you go looking for it.

I agree that it's still a gimmick that most people don't want, but they're not actually that far away from "3D without glasses", at which point I think it could go either way.

There's no denying that 3D adds an extra dimension (no pun) to certain types of broadcasts, much like HD does. But whether it will catch on wholesale, who knows. I don't think it's a bad move by eurosport though, if the content is there and available.

Yes, I think most people would prefer to see more HD channels added first like the following:

    - Sky Sports HD
    - Sky Movies HD
    - Sky 1 HD
    - Sky Atlantic HD
    - RTE 2 HD
    - C4 HD
    - UTV HD
    - Film 4 HD
    - RTE 1 + 1
    - RTE Junior
    - The remaining Dave channels
    - CBS channels

Far more people would get use out of these channels then Eurosport 3D. Very few people have 3D TV's.

I see this as more of a marketing step by UPC, so that they can say they have 3D TV also and that they are just as good as sky. But we know the reality, it is a repeat of the HD situation, while UPC has HD, it is a far inferior line up then Sky.

There are currently glasses free autostereoscopic tvs out there but theres distance limitations and the cost is currently quite high.
Toshiba are expected to deliver their glasses-free 3D TV on a global scale by 2015.
If you have a choice when buying go for full-3D rather than 3D-ready when buying as full 3D is 1920x1080p, this is, 2K x 1K; and 600 Hz.

They shouldn't add any other channels until they tick off the list of popular channels first?

Basically yes, they should be focusing on getting the popular channels first. Because you know, they are popular, as in people actually care about them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,818 ✭✭✭Minstrel27

They should work on getting the popular channels, I agree with this. But that doesn't mean they should neglect signing up the less popular niche channels.

jeez - when they don't add channels people moan and when they do people moan!

3D tvs are more widespread than you would think and many are cheap as well. Next year most manufacturuers will have 3D as standard on all sets. Adding 3D doesn't add to much to the production.

I would imagine that sometimes adding channels is more about the contracts etc than just about bothering to include them - some contracts are easier to complete than others.

Those looking for UPC to add Sky's own range of HD channels don't understand the conplexities of getting that sort of deal done.

Given the channel is only going to run for 2 weeks and will end on Monday, it is hardly something to write home about.

True and most of us here understand the complexities. BTW available bandwidth can also be an issue.

However most people shouldn't need or care about these complexities. The customer is paying for the service, if they don't get the channels they want, then they will go elsewhere.

BTW I think what pisses people off the most, is that UPC raised prices on the back of adding the ITV channels, no that they are gone, people are rightfully feeling hard done by.

UPC either need to reduce their prices or add channels of equal value to the lost ITV channels.

    Why is it split screen?

    I have a 3D TV, but I'm also only getting a split-screen.

Any ideas as to how to rectify this?

In the menu there should be options for side by side 3D you select it and the TV will do it's magic.
