Gutted! - Interview cancelled

I have been jobhunting for the past few months and so far have had only one interview ( a job which I did not get! ). I was delighted to receive an invitation for an interview two weeks ago for a role which I would really love to get. The interview was scheduled for last Monday ( 23rd May ).

I would really love to get this job so spent all of last weekend perfecting my interview technique, researching the company, practising interview questions etc. I went out and spent €200 on a new sharp suit to look the part. Got my hair done to make the right first impression. Anyway Monday afternoon arrived and I was all ready for my interview. I was on my way to the interview when my mobile rang - it was the receptionist from the company saying that the directors would have to cancel my interview as they had to attend an urgent meeting. She said she would call me in the following few days to rearrange the interview. I was gutted but thought it was an opportunity for me to brush up my skills even further before the interview.

Anyway it has now been a week today since I received that call and I have not heard anything since from the company. I dont understand as I fit the role requirements perfectly and I am available to start immediately. I am really feeling down with this job hunting lark as I feel I am getting nowhere. All I seem to do everyday is search for jobs and send my CV to companies on spec and usually hear nothing back and if I do it is usually that I am over qualified for their requirements. ( no such thing as overqualified in my mind ).

I am annoyed with myself for spending €200 on a suit when the money could be used to help pay the mortgage this week. I know I will use the suit again but €200 is alot of money when you have nothing coming in. I dont think it is fair for employers to raise somebodys hopes and then let them down. I feel really down as another week has gone by and I am no further on. I contacted them on Friday afternoon and have not had a call back. It has left me with a very bad impression of this company.

I am a qualified accountant and the role that is offered is a professional role so you think the company would be keen to make a good impression and at least email me. Anyone else experienced this problem?

Sorry to hear what happened but it seems common place these days. I would imagine an interview would have been cancelled with good reason, companies don't want to mess potential employee's for company image reasons etc. Also interviews have to be scheduled so they don't want people all over the place for no reason.

I'd ring them and politely ask for any updates.

Yeah, I'd ring them and politely ask too.

It's a horrible situation OP. You have my sympathy on it.

That's really crappy, ring them and ask for an update, and to hell with them if nothing is forthcoming. Probably not a company you'd want to work for if that's the way they carry on.

Hopefully the urgent meeting was genuine and they will re-schedule.

I had a situation where I went for a job but the idiot who was seeking to fill the position and interviewed me had not got the proper approvals for hiring someone from his finance director - job vanished up it's arse

I had a 2nd round job interview a few years back,it required me to take a day of work and commute 5 hours to the interview.
I was in the office 15 mins early ,I was told that The interviewer in question was busy would get to me as soon as he could.1 hour after official start time I was told he was tied up and would not get to me.I offered to come back later in the day.I mentioned I was available up to 11pm and was told he was tied up all day and they would reschedule.
I left thinking F**k that ,glad i found out in advance what kind of show they were running etc.

But later that week I got a call from the manager ,something serious came up and it was all hands on deck ,He apologized and agreed to do the interview over the phone I ended up accepting the job and loved it there.

Long Story short ,It is very annoying but things happen and I would give the company the benefit of the doubt for a few days more.

Thank you for all your replies. Bandana boy you have given me some hope!
I still unfortunately have heard nothing but I will give them until the end of the week.

Hears hoping I will hear some good news this week. I know if I can just get the interview I can get the job.:)
