Not a chance will renewables be able to meet that demand, it may pick up the current year on year increase in energy demand but there is not a hope in hell can it be relied upon to power a quarter of your countries needs. IMO nuclear is an essential component in any renewable energy heavy grid, there needs to be a clean, relaible alternative when the wind doesn't blow or the sun doesn't shine.

Absolute madness. The Fukushima incident has shown just how safe nuclear power is these days, the plant wasn't even designed to withstand tsunami's and yet it did. Still, this is good news for the rest of us as it means Germany won't be as competitive as they once were.

France has dozens of reactors, they will just invade and use theirs.

glad to see that sensible people are still making the right decisions.... oh wait never mind.

Germany - not on a major faultline, no real risk of tsunami, no major natural disasters in donkeys.

yeah i can see how much risk they are in

Silly decision and only pandering to the general public. The Greens have gained a lot of power recently because of this nonsense. It's ridiculous here, the amount of people protesting is absurd, morons is what the most of them are. They don't want nuclear, there is a 23% deficit to be made up and they offer no alternatives. These will be same muppets that will out protesting when energy prices start to rocket because it will need to be imported. You can already see them protesting against the pylons that need to be built to get energy to the south.

And the irony of it all is that Germany have better measures in place than their neighbours, and if anything were to ever go wrong there then there is nothing they can do to stop the wind!!

probably not well but there is always another option. Don't invade poland?

and in the event of war breaking out a shutdown procedure i'm sure could be put in place giving enough time to make the sites safe if they got bombed.

and maybe the UN (yeah i know!) could add a new rule to the rules of engagement and have them sites the same as hospitals etc?!

If Germany says it will be able to rely on renewable energy after 2022, they'll make certain that they achieve it. If Ireland made the same announcement, we'd be eating raw food and be carrying candles in 2022. We'd also be wondering where the money had gone, and where to hold the tribunal.

Possibly true, but they do utilise it a lot moer and a lot better. In any case, you can be dam nsure that they won't halt all neuclear production until something is in line to make up the shortfall.

Solar Electric Power is getting very cheap these days. It's said that to be competitive with coal generation, the cost has to be below 1$/watt. You can now buy such a system. Back when they were putting solar panels first on satellites they were costing 600$/watt, now they are printing the panels onto metal sheets just like a newspaper.

They close them because they get to please the Greens, appear to be doing something about climate change and pump mountains of EU cash into bolstering their economy.

Yeah, they're building a gas pipeline direct to Germany under the Baltic Sea, bypassing all the dodgy East European countries.

    Well, it's producing somethhing.

The north of Germany does get a ****load of wind. not for one second sayig that that#s gonna solve all energy problems, but it's not like Germany is building these things to improve the landscape.

It's a pity that Russia's even more dodgy. They'll have Europe by the balls when the price-blackmail kicks off. The Germans would be better off if they dropped a match, and fixed the pipe so the blowback would incinerate Russia.

    To be fair, I agree with shutting down all the first generation commercial reactors (the ones which rely on active, rather than passive, cooling);
modern ones though, are mostly passively cooled and are far more safe, so it's a massive shame that these dodgy first generation reactors have been allowed to push nuclear power back decades.

It's the nuclear industries chickens coming home to roost though; many companies knew how dangerous some of their reactors were, and they didn't give a shít, just saw the billions rolling in.

On Adam Curtis's blog a while back, after Fukushima, he posted an interesting episode from one of his documentaries, relating to nuclear industry in early days: (I know people regard his stuff as semi-CT like, but it's worth a look :))

Nuclear power still needs to be subsidised by the tax payer. They should forget about Nuclear and go with gas, it will be cheap for another 100 years. They've discovered heaps of it.

can you see the difference in "Discovered" and "Created" Gas will eventually run out too, nuclear energy is pretty much infinite (correct me if i'm wrong AH)

A lot of the newly discovered gas can only be gotten by fracking, which has some serious negative impacts on the area it's done in.

I don't think Nuclear Power is infinite, you still need uranium. There is enough to last 80 years.
Current usage is about 68,000 tU/yr. Thus the world's present measured resources of uranium (5.4 Mt) in the cost category slightly above present spot prices and used only in conventional reactors, are enough to last for about 80 years. This represents a higher level of assured resources than is normal for most minerals. Further exploration and higher prices will certainly, on the basis of present geological knowledge, yield further resources as present ones are used up.
