Hi - I'm going to be starting a new job on the Kylemore Rd and was hoping to live round Ballsbridge which would mean using the 18 bus. Does anyone head out to work on the 18 in this direction? Is it fairly ok?

    Any help would be brilliant!

    Thanks a mil!:)

Its years since I bussed it but the 18 was always pretty infrequent and never on time. Check the dublin bus timtable and alway be there early.

Off peak, it's great, quick way of crossing south side surburbs, and fairly reliable timewise.

At peak, it struggles in choke points like Ranelagh/Rathmines/Crumlin.

Use www.rpti.ie or www.dublinbuslive.com to time buses.

My cousin often used it to go from Ballyfermot to Drimnagh for school. I heard regular occasions of it failing to run and on one occasion DB point blank denied that the bus didn't run, accusing him of not hailing the bus.

The RTPI might help to reduce incidents such as this but I'm not sure if the 18 could be relied upon.

completely unreliable. i get it the other direction, but in the evenings going towards rathmines from waterloo road it can take anything between 5 and 45 minutes to come from sandymount to my stop.

Thanks everyone...it doesn't sound like the safest bet!

I got it for years (1995 to 2003) from Rathmines / Ranelagh to Sandymount Dart station.

Up to 7.30am it ran pretty much on schedule. After that, severe delays and the bus was often full when it arrived in Rathmines.

Going home was ok if I got to Sandymount before 6.00pm as frequency went down after that. On numerous occasions the DART pulled into Sandymount with an 18 behind the gates. I used to pray for them to stay down but usually they didn't - which meant a sprint up Sandymount Avenue hoping for a sound bus driver that might slow down and wait for me.

This doesn't make a lot of sense.

Of course, it does depend on where on Kylemore Road and where in Ballsbridge, both are large enough areas.
