European car hire details?

    Hi All.

We are heading over to france for a few days next month to look at some wedding venues.

Becuse we shall be out in the country we will be renting a car to get from place to place.

We shall be picking up from bordeaux airport and will have it for two days.

Neither of us have driven abroad before and i was just wondering if someone could help with a few details.

When you rent a car, does the fee include any kind of insurance or do you use your own insurance and let them know you will be renting a car abroad?

Also, my other half has a company car and insurance policy, but is also a named driver on my insurance as we bought a car together. Would these insurances cover him to drive the rental?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, but can seem to find answers to these questions on the hire sites. And really want to make sure as I am a little nervous as it is with the thoughts of trying to drive on the other side of the road!!

    Thanks

This seems like what you need.

Id call your own insurance company and see what they will and wont cover when it comes to rentals. If they can provide full cover, including damage to the car, then you might save yourself a packet by avoiding getting ripped off abroad.

The tips on that website are valid for America, not for Europe. In Europe, you will have to get some basic insurance with your rental, no matter what credit card or car insurance you have. This will cover you for third party liability. On top of that, you can book additional (usually overpriced) insurance packages if you wish. Several rental car brokers offer packages that include cheaper insurance, so make sure to shop around.

    Check out www.novacarhire.com

An Irish company that offers very good deals and includes all necessary insurance so you won't have to pay more when you turn up to pick up the car (though there may be optional ones for extra € if you want for more piece of mind).

Two other brokers that offer good rates with zero excess are:

    http://www.economycarrentals.com/
    http://www.autoeurope.com/

Some car rental companies include insurance fee in their final quote and some don’t, so I would say that it depends upon the rental company. I personally prefer hiring from http://www.pointcarhire.com/ as they are a broker firm which list cars from major rental car suppliers like National, Budget, Enterprise, etc. So you can view all the cars, their prices at one place and select according to your need, budget and availability.
