The time has come for him to step aside.

Not because he has failed.

But because he has taken his club as far as they can go.

I'm not a Man Utd fan, but I'm not an ABU either and I admire Ferguson.

By quitting this summer, he will leave the club on a high despite last night's result.

By remaining on, he will take on the appearance of failed politician, desperate to cling on to the trappings of power.

And when he is eventually removed from office - it will lack the gloss and dignity that he would rightly receive if he stepped down before next season.

There comes a time when you have to call it a day.

After 25 years - that day has finally arrived.
