I was thinking of going for an sti check in cork, what's the procedure exactly? When I go to the sexual health centre do I get checked there or is a sample sent away to be checked, how long do I have to wait on results.

OP there is a large stickied thread here that will contain all the answers you need.

In short... You will be asked questions about your sexual history and your reasons for being tested.

You will get a standard blood test which checks for HIV, syphillis and Hepatitis.

If u are a guy, your penis and testicles will be checked for lumps, bumps etc... Typically it is squeezed hard to push secretions into the urethea. A cotton bud is then placed inside to take a swab. You will also be asked to give a urine sample. (so try not pee in the hours befor ur appointment)

Swab and urine teat for chlamydia and gonorrhoea. That's pretty much it.

Depending on the clinic you will have the results immediately for tests except the blood tests. Blood tealst results will take between 1 and two weeks normally.

If you are getting tested following a specific sexual encounter, remember to wait for a period of 12 weeks for tests - "window period" for HIV antibodies etc to show up in the blood(conclusively)

Good luck with the testing. And remember that negative tests don't make you immune from future infections so always protect yourself

Not true about the swab of the penis! Not on the initial test anyways!

Will be an examination of your genital area as mentioned, a Urine and blood sample will be given/taken, you will receive your results after a few days........ and depending on the results and if anything is found then the swab test mentioned above will take place..

I went to the YHS - it's free.

I made the appointment, was waiting about 2 weeks, had appointment, got results 2 weeks later :D

They did a swab of my urethra (didn't feel it), ass!, and throat. As well as a feel around and a blood test.
