Help my dry hair!

Recently got my hair coloured much darker and it's so much more noticeable now how dry it is than it was when it was blonde. Can anyone recommend anything for dry hair? I bought those VO5 hot oils today and some John Frieda shine spray to make it look less dry. Any other tips on what to do with it? Thanks.

Morroccan oil, and/or soak it in olive oil overnight

I had really dry hair from years of dying and over-styling. I found the Tresemme Luxurious Moisture shampoo and conditior to be great.
I also use the Lee Stafford Treatment For Hair That Never Grows Past A Certain Lenght, I've not noticed any difference to my hair growth but it leaves my hair in brilliant condition.
Also, if you use any heated styling styling tools like a straightner or blow-dryer then it'd be a good idea to use a heat protectant spray. The Toni & Guy Protein one is brilliant but is pricey.
I also like the Umberto Gianni serum but will use any serum going really, as they give good shine.
I think Oils are for the scalp more than the hair.

I have dry hair too but morrocan oil has made my hair soft and shiny and I like the john frieda miraculous recovery mask I use it once a week its amazing looks like I've been to the hairdressers :D

Thanks a mill. Where can I get Moroccon oil? Is it easily available?

A lot of good hairdressers will stock it but it isn't the cheapest product on the market. I got a bottle for about 30euro but it does work wonders for your hair

Thanks. Is it available anywhere other than hairdressers at all? Bit pricey for me unfortunately.

There's a salon supply shop on Abbey St in Dublin city centre called Terrisales who sell it. I'm not sure if it would be much cheaper in there though. Other than that have a look online. Here's some on Amazon:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=morrocanoil&x=0&y=0

Still a bit pricey I'm afraid!

It seems pricey but trust me, it lasts a very very long time. I use it almost daily and I've had it many months at this stage. It's very concentrated so you only need one go of the bottle per use

If you know anyone going on a J1, I highly recommend asking them to pick you up a huge bottle of Nexxus conditioner for dry hair. I got a sample from my local salon and they told me they don't sell it in Ireland anymore, got my friend to bring me back some last summer, you only need a tiny amount and it lasts ages. It's fantastic, I don't know what I'll do when I run out (that'll take a while though, got a big thing of it and like I say, only need a little amount). Sorry I can't recommend anything more local :o

I use Moroccanoil too Daisy and it's fab....

I use the Moroccanoil brand or sometimes a different one I got in Sally's for 15 euro called Argan secret.

I'd used it for months and then bleached my hair to blonde from black with no damage and I would definitely say that the Moroccan oil contributed greatly to the condition of my hair because I had no damage to my hair and I bleached it 6 or 7 times!

I also got a PM from someone on boards who has a website selling pure Argan oil (which is supposed to be even better than moroccan oil)

I'll dig out the name of the website if you like?

Think sallys sells argan oil and theres a hair supply shop in castlecourt upstairs that does if your anywhere near there.

But I would try the conditioner that comes with home dye kits, its super strong I have hair that tends towards dryness I`m mixed race and this is the best things I`ve found. Think it actually can be bought by itself anyway now next to them.

sally salon services on drury st do a conditioner called esmo that's really cheap and excellent. you can put it in the night before and wash it out in the morn and it makes hair softer. i feel like oils make your hair stronger. i've used olive oil before, again put it in the night before. and it's increadible. and super cheap. you just have to be careful washing it out that you get it all out.

I find almond oil is good too. I leave it in overnight and 1 wash takes it all out in the morning. My hair is supersoft afterwards :)

It's http://mi-oils.com/ sorry about delay, only saw this now, I haven't used the website myself though.
i feel like oils make your hair stronger.

I would definitely agree with that....like I said I think my use of Moroccan oil made my hair able to cope with all the bleach. I also used the Sally's one called Argan secret directly in between bleachs....so I bleached my hair, washed out the bleach and put in loads of the Argan secret, dried it and bleached it again.....I did it a good few times in the space of a weekend and I definitely feel like it protected it. The reason I used the one from Sally's for that was because I prefer the smell of the moroccan oil brand for when I normally wash my hair so I didn't want to waste it (although a bottle does last forever and I have really long hair).
The Sally's one still smells nice though.

Sally's have another one too called Orofluido which is in all the magazines at the mo and is a mix of Argan/Linseed and Cyperus oil.

You just pump it into your hands and rub your hands together and then through your damp hair, I use around a pump and a half and I have very long hair. It doesn't make it greasy at all but I only barely run my hands over the root area.

Do you mean you leave it in? I thought you would put the oil in and shampoo it out no?

If you're on a bit of a budget, I find Aussie 3 Minute Miracle quite good. Think Aussie products are on special offer in Boots atm too.

I tried this recently as a stopgap, and its absolutely brilliant. It leaves my hair shinier and softer than its ever been, and it doesn't seem to build up (been using it a few weeks now). I normally buy Keratase or Nexxus products.

Usually very moisturising shampoos and conditioners leave my hair a bit lank, but this didn't. And its cheap as can be!

Do you cover your hair with something when going to bed? Does it not stain the bedding?

Yeah, cling film around the hair and a towel on the pillow

Sorry, do you leave the olive oil in too after shampooing and conditioning? Or do you wash that out after leaving it in overnight?

You'd wash the olive oil out, I've never used olive oil but i've used coconut oil overnight as a treatment for similar results to olive oil.

Wash it out yes, I do it the night before I'm washing my hair anyway so it all comes out then

Really? Do you have sensitive skin? I've never had a problem with them, but then again, my skin has never really reacted to anything!

u can get it online @ hqhair OR go to noel higgins hairdressers (more expensive option)

i tried morroccan oil treatment. different strokes for different folks. the result was my hair was much softer but so much more frizzier. I actually wouldn't use it again.

    hope the info helps :D

if you've got a bit of money to spend I'd recommend trying Kerastase Ciment Anti Usure Conditioner/Leave in Treatment. Really helped me when I started dying my hair, its full of proteins and totally changed the condition of my hair, is much healtheir now. Its 20 odd euro in PM though.

Boots have an own brand intensive conditioner with coconut oil which is great. Comes in a big tub and costs about 2.50. Leave it in for a few minutes and it makes your hair super soft and smells yummy!

sometimes too much protein might not be good for yr hair. it depends on the balance of yr hair. You might just need moisture instead. I would start with moisturising deep conditioner (w/out protein) & if that doesn't work then try a product with protein in it.

    here's some info:
    http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/curly-hair-care-methods/no-poo/how-does-hair-porosity-affect-your-curls?utm_source=nc_newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=20110607

    http://forum.blackhairmedia.com/printer_friendly_posts.asp?TID=22392

here's a blog which has people's own experiences with protein sensitivity:
    http://www.naturallycurly.com/curltalk/general-discussion-about-curly-hair/65365-how-do-you-know-if-your-protein-sensitive.html

if all else fails you might just need to keep trying different products until you find the right one. the article might help you on choosing product based on their ingredients.

whenever you do find a good product - make note of the ingredients & you'll be able to choose similiar products without going in blindly

    hope this helps.:D

VO5 actually have a new product out containing Argan oil, it's called miracle concentrate, I picked some up today for around a fiver for 50ml in superdrug, I haven't used it yet but will let you know what it's like when i've tried it because it's supposed to be FAB and for the price if it's anything like the normal moroccan oil then it will be a bargain!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,644 ✭✭✭theg81der

Did you ever try pantene - 10 days to beautiful hair challenge thingy? I use the grren one, think its smooth and sleek, and its literally amazing especially the conditioner. I have naturally super dry hair cause I`m mixed race and this stuff does exactly what it says on the tin.

Just to say, when I had really bleached blonde hair I found that olive oil would leave it looking very yellow. Just my experience though. I used mushed up avocado and that worked a treat!

I will of course let you know :)

It might be a week or so before I can give you an accurate review of it though because I used it yesterday after I dyed my hair but my hair always feels fab after dying my hair anyway so I couldn't really tell.

I'm washing it tonight but I have to use a protein treatment and deep conditioner so again it won't be an accurate review but i'll try to update in a few days when I wash my hair again if that's ok!

I got this in Boots in Blanch the other day. Can I just say it is the bees knees! It says to use it on wet hair and I was a little worried it might make my hair greasy so I put it in when my hair was dried (according to the label this is okay). It's LOVELY! My hair is so shiny and soft and smells gorgeous. Used about 4 drops of the oil and got compliments in work about how shiny my hair looks today! If you see it, buy it. I think I paid around €6 in boots.

Try macadamia oil. You wash it out like with vo5 but the results are much better. I had the same prob going blonde to brown with looking very dry and i've got nice glossy hair now! Plus its super cheap 2.99 for 30 mls!

Clairol nice n easy "colour seal" conditioner, it's the conditioner that you get with a home dye colour.
I have the dry, course hair and this gives mine a lovely shine, it feels lovely in my hair, makes it so soft and easy to dry (I usually struggle for about half an hour drying my hair straight) and it's only €1.39 for 6 treatments.
I use tresemme heat defence spray as well for drying and styling.

Just to update you on this product, I LOVE LOVE LOVE it, it is a million times better than Moroccan oil (which I adored). My hair literally feels like silk, I used it when my hair was wet and you can add more when it's nearly dry if you want without it going greasy! Major raves for this product, I will be stocking up!!
