Can I claim tax back for unemployed months in the tax year before starting work?

I started work with my previous employer August of 2008 but was previously unemployed from the previous year, and I am wondering if I am eligible to claim tax back for the months prior to commencing work, or do one's unemployed months have to follow months in the year you have worked?

Also, if I am eligible, although I am thankfully able to access all my payslips from Payslips Online @ https://www.login2my.info, and I have my P45 and my P60 from 2010, is there a separate P45 for 2008, or do I just include my 2010 documents with my application for a 2008 tax refund?

you can use the revenue site to enter your various data, and then request a balancing statement for 2008 (and subsequent years)

    Thanks.

I have just registered for 'PAYE Anytime', is that where I was to enter my details? It is going to take a few days for a PIN to come in the post before I can access it.

Is the balancing statement to see if my tax refund was applied to subsequent years, and once I have these balancing statements do I still complete the P50 or am I really better off just going into them tomorrow, and if so what documents should I bring with me apart from P45s, some payslips, and my passport?

the balancing statement will set out your full-year position for 2008 or whatever year it is. You will be able to see what allowances you got and whether you overpaid/underpaid.

If you have time to drop into the tax office this would be good, as you might get useful leaflets/forms, or talk to someone there.

It takes a while to get the PIN:) but it will be worth the wait as you will get sorted out more quickly in future

Okay so I got my PIN and logged in earlier - thanks for that.

For the years I'm interested in there were two entries before I did anything:

    PAYE Tax Credit
    Personal Tax Credit

both of which were marked as claimed, although I have never tried to claim tax back. Does 'claimed' mean the allowances and any monies I may have been due were already applied to my pay and there is nothing for me to claim?

I did add allowances for rent and trade union subscription and it calculated a figure for both. Is this figure what I will be awarded if approved, or would somebody in revenue do some further arithmetic on said figure to produce a new one?

The system reports it should be processed within two days so fingers crossed here! :)
