A DOG which had been blasted with more than 40 shotgun pellets, tied up and tossed into a shallow grave has been found alive.
Astonished cops discovered the female cross-breed whimpering in pain after it had managed to wriggle free and poke its nose above ground.
Police believe the animal's survival instincts saved it from suffocating - and have launched a manhunt to trace the thugs responsible for the dog's torture.
Offers of a new home for the pet - which has been named Star - have come in from around the world.
Star was found near cliffs at Ghar Hasan, at the southern tip of Malta, buried alive and bleeding. Her nose and mouth were tied with rope and she had bullet wounds in her head.
Police rushed her to an animal hospital where she survived, despite vets having to remove 40 gun pellets from her head.
The case has sparked outrage and there have been calls for the Maltese government to strengthen animal cruelty laws.
    Tears
Currently, a conviction for animal abuse carries a maximum jail sentence of one year or a maximum fine of £40,000.
A silent protest is also to be held in the capital Valletta next Saturday.
And the fury has spread further than just the Mediterranean island, with a Facebook page - named Star: The Dog Who Lived - set up in an attempt to catch the culprits.
The site had more than 10,000 friends yesterday, with one user posting: "I actually cried like a baby, I was ashamed for the humans responsible.
"I could not even look into Star's eyes on the picture without tears pouring down my face. She trusted a human, that's what she got back."
Another said: "We will protest in front of the building if or when this monster who did this goes to court."
And a Maltese newspaper said: "Star, that's the name which she deserves, showed what a courageous, caring, sweet and loving companion she is.
"She immediately allowed all the animal welfare staff to cuddle her and she even managed to wag her tail as if wanting to thank everyone."
Animal welfare officers said they'd received homing offers for Star from as far afield as the US and Germany, while a woman from Canada had sent the dog a personalised blanket.
Officials said once Star was fit to leave the hospital, it would first be offered to the person who'd made the initial homing request.

people who hurt animals are horrible

a dog is such a trusting pet, and to betray that trust by hurting the animal is just... I don't even know. :(

*Expresses moral outrage at this incident*

    .....

*Goes off to enjoy a chicken & bacon dinner even though those animals suffered disgusting conditions and cruel torture also, and by purchasing & consuming them - directly influencing that cruelty*

Another week another Saturday spent on your smug high horse.

Unless you live your life totally without the benefit of animal products or products trialled on animal products - which is nigh-on impossible - you're as hypocritical as your posts are tediously repetetive.

Much like the other thread on setting horses ablaze, we are all agreed, it's disgusting.

    These threads baffle me though.

Oh so just because animal cruelty cannot be entirely eliminated at this point, we shouldn't try to reduce it as much as possible? The meat industry is where the vast majority of cruelty exists. Following your logic, because 1 animal is tortured, then 1000 animals being tortured is acceptable.

hey elisabeth blanctorche, my beloved dog won't eat the organic tofu I gave him and only eats dog food made from those poor wee chickens. You seem like you'd know, how do I make my dog understand the plight of the chickens?

Following your logic theres no one on the planey entitled to criticised people who torture animals for fun, so I'll stick with my line of reasoning thanks very much.

Its your smugness on this topic in general and your labelling of peole as hypocrites for speaking out about cruelty thats the reall issue here, not to mention the irony of an animla lover giving out about people eho criticise animal cruelty. You got owned on this last week yet here you're back for more.

You're talking through your hat there.

You're talking through your hat there.

No I am not. Can you give me another industry with a larger scale of animal cruelty? There are almost 10 billion animals killed every year for meat. Think it's you talking through your hat.

The animals are raised and killed in as humane a way as possible. There is no cruelty involved. I seriously doubt that you have any first hand knowledge. Have you ever worked on a farm or an abattoir?

As much as I disagree with elisabeth above, that's just not true.of course many farms are run properly, but you're not suggesting there's perfect conditions for all slaughter animals on all farms?

Ah here! Now you're getting ridiculous.

What, why? You've never heard of these cases? Technically a free range chicken only has to be let out of its cage once a day to be classed as free range.
