Android market, email address help

I have a google mail account thats no longer used that's linked to market and i can't access market.
I tried to delete the gmail acc but to do that i need to do a factory restore on my sgs.
Would i lose everything on my phone, apps, phone numbers etc

Mmmm your google account that you sign into on your phone should be the one that accesses the market and mail etc, are you saying it's detecting another account for the market ?

No, the email I was using was a shared account and i'm no longer part of that group and the password has changed, so I can't access the market as I need to log into my email first.
To delete that email and add my own I need to do a factory reset. Just don't want to lose everything on my phone if there's another way to do it

Download App Monster. It stores the APK's of all your installed apps in a single folder. It will not however, save the data associated with each app.
OTOH, Titanium Backup restores all data. I never used the paid for one, but I tinker about with the phone so much anyway, I'll have a different ROM every few days. (Using MrGaraks MIUI ROM at the moment)
