    I think form your post you have had surgically assissted palatal expansion. this is done for adlts who have narrow palates.

    The surgery is common enough. The expanders are used routinely in children and adults but the adults need surgery for it to work.

    The pain will resolve over time, if concerned go the the orthodontist or surgeon involved.
