Hey guys, I've just completed Grade 7 on the piano with the RIAM (Royal Irish Academy of Music). There isn't a Grade 8 RIAM piano book listed on the Opus II or Waltons websites. So I'm just wondering is there a Grade 8 book published yet for 2012? And if so, where to buy it? Thank you.

Sometimes they don't update there websites. I am too on Grade 7 but doing Grade 8 next year. What pieces did you choose? The best shop for music book is McCullogh Piggot on South William Street. They always have what your looking for!

I would love to talk more about music /piano with you in private message if you wish?

    Hello there,

I did Grade V a hundred million years ago and recently started playing again, including learning Nocturne Op 9 No. 2. I am half-thinking of going back and doing some exams, but wondering if I could skip Grade VI or would I be totally lost at Grade VII or even VIII?? I reckon I could learn the pieces, but the aural/sight/scale tests etc. are pretty hard are they? What percentage do those bits comprise of the overall exam?

    Thanks!

I think that you should skip Grade 6 and go to 7. I think that going from Grade 5 to Grade 8 is a HUGE step that I wouldn't even take if I was in your position. Grade 8 is hard enough but that Chopin Nocturne was just easy for me. Don't know about the others though because I have not yet tried them, but I will let you know what pieces I choose for List A and B. So go out and buy the Grade 7 book and/or the Grade 6 because their is a TONNE of scales and other things for Grade 6 and 7 alone so I suggest trying out pieces from the Grade 6 book first, then if you can manage them TO PERFECTION, go on and just go with the Grade 7. I now you can do it, but you just have to have a little think about it and have a go at both!
Thanks for the message and please let me know what ou think of doing. I their any pieces you are stuck on now or even when you select pieces please let me know and I will gladly help you with any questions you may have!

Thanks for your reply Scott. Yes, I think Grade VIII would definitely be beyond me. I should aim for VII I think - might as well aim high! I'm hoping to browse the books tomorrow in Cork - hope I don't get completely daunted... I work full time and have 2 small kids so getting time to practice isn't the easiest. Sometimes I'm not even sure if I should do exams at all. Maybe I should just try and learn pieces I like for my own pleasure...

2 kids and a full time job?? Yeah I think you should just learm pieces for your own pleasure but you can still buy the exam books if you like and learn pieces out of them so you don't have to do the actuall exam.
What pieces are you currently working on/ practising now???

Yes maybe I'm being unrealistic!! I had a look at the RIAM books yesterday. I actually do think I could manage the Grade VIII, but it would take me the full 2 years allowed (or possibly more!).

I'm learning one of the Grade VI ones at the moment, Chopin's Prelude in E Minor, Op 28 No. 4. It's quite easy but soooo moody - gorgeous.

Also bought the sheet music to Michael Nyman's 'the heart asks pleasure first' yesterday. Should keep me going for a while :-)

    What about you?
