If you are buying on line from Amazon and are resident in the Republic of Ireland you can only buy from Amazon.com as Amazon uk will not ship any electronic items to the Republic of Ireland. I bought one before Christmas and had to buy it from the US site. It worked out pretty much the same price as buying it from the UK site. I would say just check out both methods of buying and then figure out which one suits you best.

Just a correction, this is not true. Amazon do ship electronics to Rep. Of Ireland, but for whatever red tape reason we still have to buy the kindle from the us site.

Oh..good to know that, I have just been unlucky with them so. I tried to get a new laptop charger before and had to have it shipped to a friend in Northern Ireland. I also even tried to get a kids book...talking frog or something and again had to have it shipped to Northern Ireland.

This is true, although they are inconsistent, sometimes you can purchase certains items and other times, not.

The Kindle will have to be purchase from .com though, for sure.

I saw them in Dixons in the airport last week so maybe if you check their website you could find out what other Dixons in the Dublin area are selling them. I dont know what other shops are selling them.

Any idea how much they are in the Airport? They're €149 and €199 in PC World Airside. Do travellers in the EU get anything off?

How much does it cost to download books? Are they a similar price to bookshops?

I got one off the Us Amazon store. Nice and handy and they have you set up for buying directly from them straight away.

Don''t bother with the 3G just get the wi-fi version. Saves on the battery as well.

I got a leather case, if you can afford the case with the light, go for it. I also bought a european plug. Both essential to me if buying from Amazon US.

Just on the power plug thing for the Amazon.com Kindle. You don't need to buy one, if you have a fairly recent mobile phone that has a micro USB type connector as that's what the Kindle 3 has. I just used my HTC charger and it works fine. The Kindle comes with a USB cable so you can charge it off your PC.

If you do go for both of these save yourself a bundle by ordering them from dealextreme.com

booksonboard.com does mobipocket versions of books as well as pdf. just found it they seem to have a good selection.

still have to check if files are unprotected though otherwise they won't read on a kindle.

actually they have a good selection until you register your address... so I'm moving to the US....

If i buy a kindle from amazon.com will I get caught for Customs in Ireland? I have someone in the states who could order one for me and bring it home in next few weeks. What's the best option?

Mine didn't get caught anyway. And a few people here got it off Amazon.com so I think you'd be pretty safe :)

If you buy from amazon.com, they incorporate the tax into the overall price.

Folks, have been intending to buy a (wi-fi only) Kindle and am passing through Dublin airport on Monday...

If I pick one up there what are my chances of getting it setup and ready to roll in departures?
Will be away for a four days and it would be great if I could use it out of the box. Does it use your existing Amazon account?

    Cheers :)

Don't think it's an issue, you can register it through wifi once you have your amazon account e mail address and password. Fairly straightforward.

Cool, I'm thinking it must be pretty straightforward. Here's hoping there's a bit of battery life in the thing!

Bought mine last week and it came half charged!

FYI, I bought mine in Dixons in Luton airport. If anyone is passing through the WiFi is £101 and the 3G is £144. I got the latter and it came to €166 which is pretty sweet!

I had a go of one for the first time over the weekend and am now seriously thinking of getting one.

I was looking them up on adverts, but for whatever reason most of the sellers have prices of around 180 euros, even though they're around 120 euros new

Did Amazon just drop their prices by a load recently and the 2nd hand market hasn't caught up yet, or what?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,558 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dades

Well I followed through and bought one in Dublin Airport. Opted for the wifi only version (am always hooked up to PC/laptop) and it cost me €127 which I was very happy with.

Bought the latest Iain M. Banks over wifi when I got to my hotel after having read the instructions on the plane. Happy so far - I'm now ready for George RR Martins monster book out next month!

Got the 3G version delivered from Amazon.com today for €183. I can't seem to find a section with free books in the store? Where is it anyone?

It's a disaster the way you can't adjust the screen brightness in it. I thought I would be able to read in bed with the bedside light off, but alas no. I'd hardly have bought it if I had known that. I'm dissapointed with it for that reason.

go for all the classics - they're mostly free

kindle is a reader only - not a computer. that means it has no backlight, as you have on all PC's laptops and iPhones etc. It should be treated like a book, to be read in sunlight or at night, under light. I got one last month and i love it - I brought it on holidays to Lanzarote and read two boks on the beach, in the sun.

can you red a book in the dark?? the reason the kindle is better than the iPad as a ebook reader is that it has no backlight and thus can be read in sunlight and it reduces eye strain.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,558 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dades

I was put off by the fact you couldn't read in the dark when I first looked into eReaders. But once you get head around the concept it makes sense.

That said, I would have the screen a small bit brighter.

I would like if some future Readers had a little built in lamp you could pop up.
(Yes, I know there are cases that have this but I don't need a case or want the added weight of one.)

Well in Ireland there is it's more likely that it would be used indoors than in sunlight. It gives eye strain even in a room that is semi lit. I'm sorry I didn't spend the extra few € on an ipad that I could have used while lying in bed.

I'm the opposite. Was using my iPad as an e-reader for a few months but as soon as the winter ended and we started getting a bit of sun, it was useless. Bought a kindle a couple of months back and couldn't be without it now, I'd rather give up my iPad than kindle.

I have an iPad, it's not great for reading ebooks in bed. 2 main reasons for this are the backlight and the weight, unless I have it propped up it's much too heavy to hold comfortably while reading, so you'd have 2 types of strain to complain about - eyes and wrist. For ebook reading you picked the better device, if you wanted a tablet then you chose wrong.

Just got my Kindle and I have it charging from my PC. I removed it from USB mode so I could play with it but now I want to put it back in USB mode so I can put some books on it.

Anyone know if there is a way to put it back into USB mode without unplugging it from the PC and plugging it back in. (I dont want to unplug it because this is the first charge and want it to fully charge without interruption).

    Thanks in advance.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 7,423 Mod ✭✭✭✭pleasant Co.

This doesn't answer your question, but there's no need to worry about interrupting the first charge - do, don't, it won't make the slightest bit of difference to the battery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 553 ✭✭✭stdidit

Cheers Mactard, I sort of guessed it wouldnt effect the battery but I'm always over cautious with new gadgets!

Its actually just finished charging now so its fine. Wonder if it is possible though?

    stdidit,

You can play while charging by selecting "safely remove hardware" from your pc taskbar area but leave the kindle connected. - It does tell you this on the screen while its charging !!!

Maybe flicking the on/off slider on the Kindle would enable usb mode again?

Thats not what I want or asked! I am playing with it while it is charging but want to revert it to USB mode without unplugging and replugging it because I dont want to interrupt the charge.

I had tried that but it didnt work, all it does is puts in sleep mode and then back to 'play' mode. Thanks anyways though

Batteries have moved on from the situation where they had to be charged fully first time or they'd never work.

Hey, it's not an iPhone - you'll get weeks out it anyway!

OK, so my Mam and I are big bookworms and are looking to get a Kindle each but we have a question or two. Hope you guys can help.

If I buy from the US Store, where do I buy books from, the UK or US Kindle Store? My mam loves the latest chick-lit and as a lot of these writers are Irish it'd be much easier to get it from the UK Kindle Store and cheaper too.

Can you link multiple accounts to multiple Kindles? For example if my friend has a kindle too can we share our collections and future purchases?

I have bought from the US store, have changed my details to the UK store and all ok, books are top notch and cheap as chips.. :)

I think you can link them :)
