Does anyone know, will the new channels that we hear about on Saorview will be available on the SKY Dish or must people fork out more money to avail of them. Read someplace there was an RTE News Channel for example.

They aren't really any new stations, RTE news on a loop and wall to wall kids shows is nothing to get excited about.

Ok, i thought they might have something new, but i guess we are talking about RTE who are either very good in what they do or awful.

I find it to be a huge improvement over what it is replacing. Remember this is not something intended to compete with Sky or UPC. This is a replacement for the existing analogue terrestrial network.

Anamorphic widescreen, HD and some extra channels. Also remember that TV3 will now be available terrestrially in parts of the country that could not receive it before.

The RTE news 'channel' will just be the same loop that's currently available on the website. Go to http://www.rte.ie/news/ and click on 'RTE News Now' above the main photo.

With the limited resources available to them and the huge drop in advertising revenue over the past few years, there's no way you can expect anything more than that. RTE has as much of the Irish advertising revenue stream they are going to get, they can't afford to push out any new services because none of them will result in any additional income.

Under legislation any new channels on Saorview will made available to SKY and UPC , it's up to SKY and UPC if they want to show them or not.

Saorview will give RTE the chance to provide HD programing for the first time, however it is a merely a high quality digital replacement for the old analogue TV service which was pretty poor quality and is being shut off at the end of 2012, it should be viewed in those terms and nothing more.

    Channels on Saorview

    RTÉ1, 2HD, TV3, TG4, RTÉ News Now, 3e, RTÉjr and RTÉ 1 +1. (and RTÉ's digital radio stations).

RTÉ did ask for a separate channel called RTÉ PLUS to replace RTÉ 1 +1 in May 2012 however this was refused by Minister Carey.

Other platforms must be offered the channels but its up to those platforms to carry them. RTÉ News Now will become a more separate channel in May 2012 as will RTÉjr.

The sport in HD is HUGE and I am seriously looking forward to it. Don't forget the TIP V CORK Munster hurling match tomorrow is in HD aswell - that should look savage. Saorview is a huge step forward INHO and it will only get better. My parents only had the basic 4 channels - and TV3 and TG4 in particular were not very good quality. Enter a LG32 inch LCD and violla - GAA games on TG4 in particular were transformed for my dad. TV3 was far more watchable and now a few added channels - all with perfect reception!!

Indeed Saorview currently is an upgrade for people in 4 TV land. RTÉ 2 during the day will drop RTÉjr when ASO is complete while RTÉ TWO HD will grow into Movies and US TV shows. Then on to HD 1,3 and 4. And RTÉ News Now will become more of its own channel. All to come in time. And a few more channels.

FTA Satellite to add UK channels if you want.

I thought so too but the RTÉ sport press release doesn't say anything about it
RTÉ Sport will broadcast the first ever free-to-air HD broadcasts on Irish free-to-air Television this weekend, in what is set to be a bumper two days of sporting action. The HD broadcasts will be available on RTÉ Two HD, the first Irish free-to-air HD service now available on SAORVIEW.

The first ever free-to-air HD broadcast in Ireland will feature the Magners League Grand Final as Munster face newly crowned European Champions Leinster this Saturday 28th May live from Thomond Park. The HD action then continues with the highly anticipated Munster Hurling Senior Championship Quarter Final in Semple Stadium between Cork and Tipperary on Sunday 29th May broadcast live on RTÉ Two HD on SAORVIEW.

RTÉ Group Head of Sport, Ryle Nugent said: "RTÉ is proud to announce the HD broadcast of rugby and GAA matches for the first time ever on RTÉ Two HD as part of the new free-to-air television service SAORVIEW. This is a first for RTÉ and for SAORVIEW. These two great sporting fixtures are the first of many set to be broadcast by us on RTÉ Two HD on SAORVIEW over the coming months."
In what is set to be a thrilling finale to the season, Daire O'Brien will present live coverage of the Magners League Grand Final this Saturday afternoon as Munster battle Leinster in an All Ireland final. Daire will be joined by George Hook, Brent Pope and Conor O'Shea live at Thomond Park for reaction and analysis. The match kicks off in HD on RTÉ Two HD at 5.05pm with commentary by Hugh Cahill and Ralph Keyes.
IRFU Chief Executive Philip Browne said: "This is another step forward for the game in Ireland with the first ever HD broadcast by RTÉ as part of the new SAORVIEW service. The advent of digital broadcast technology can only improve the offering to watching rugby supporters. This weekend's game promises to be a wonderful occasion for Irish Rugby and the Magners League and those not able to attend the Grand Final will have the added bonus of watching the game in HD quality."
Keeping with the weekend of sport, Michael Lyster is joined by Cyril Farrell and Ger Loughnane in a double header of hurling action on The Sunday Game Live. In the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship quarter final, league champions Dublin take on Offaly live at Croke Park at 2.00pm with commentary by Darragh Maloney and Tomas Mulcahy. The action then continues with Munster Senior Hurling Quarter Final live in HD on RTÉ Two HD as Cork battle Tipperary at Semple Stadium in Thurles. The match throws in at 4.00pm with commentary by Ger Canning and Michael Duignan

Uachtaran Chumann Luthchleas Gael, Criostóir Ó Cuana said: "GAA fans will now be able to see the fastest game in the world in sharper focus and we look forward to seeing more GAA games in the future in HD. We welcome this new digital television service which will provide an enhanced experience for GAA fans."

    Agreed.

Its a real shame people's exceptions have been let down, especially after the excellent HD picture quality from the Munster V Leinster.

You will need a Saorview STB for each TV (if running off an aerial). Very few STBs are listed as being Soarview Approved that needs to change quickly for people with TVs in different rooms.

I think you can route each TV through the one STB but that means being only able to watch which ever channel the STB is set to, AFAIK.

My parents currently have UPC in the living room and Anologue piped around the house for TVs upstairs ect. Just wondering, if in fact we'd need a box for every room would it be better to pay the extra €5 per room for UPC multiroom and get their digital all around the house?

UPC's analogue service won't be affected by the switch-off.

I have an LCD TV but it's about 4 years old. What specifications should I look for to see if it is capable of receiving Saorview without the need to get the special receiver box?

MPEG 4 at the minimum and MHEG 5 for text.

Do you know the make and model of the TV?

so everyone has to fork out for a STB if they want to continue to watch FTA channels after the end of next year?

The EU have declared that all of its citizens will have to do this. New televisions will not need a set top box

and are they "helping" people who can't afford a STB or have a TV capable?

I own a Sony 28" CRT TV which works perfectly, and I have no intention of replacing it until it breaks. Does this mean I can't watch TV after the end of next year until I get a new telly and a STB?

How much is a STB anyway?

And a new tv won't be cheap either.

Who is behind all of this?

STB currently are at 80euro which is ridiculous but they should come down in price as time goes by so don't worry too much for the moment you aren't a first mover in anycase.

You wont be able to watch terrestrial television. Sky and UPC customers will be unaffected.

Early adopter is the correct term. They'll be about 40 euro a pop by the time the actual shutdown happens.

Where I am in North Kerry, my analogue reception has always been complete sh1te (to use a technical term). I get my TV through Sky and an FTA sat-box, and the aerial on the roof hasn't been connected for years. Would I still be wasting time and money if I were to get my hands on a Saorview box and re-connect my aerial?

So you are paying SKY mainly for a decent RTE etc picture? If so then you should check out coverage in your area.

    Yes, pathetic isn't it?

I'm just wondering how much more effective the digital signal is.

Apologies getting mixed up between Early Adopter (e.g. The Owner of the First Ipad2) and First Mover Advantage (e.g. Sony's Walkman).

One of the main reasons for the first Cable service in the US, to get a decent picture.

In the long term saving a Saorview box will be of benefit to you, FTA Sat + Saorview.

Well digital is either on 100%, or off 100% so if it works you'll have a picture that is better than analogue. Now as things stand only RTE2 is HD (mainly upscaled right now but with native HD becoming more part of the schedule).
I happen to find the others a bit "soft" if still acceptable, with time they will upgrade RTE 1 etc to HD.

It's a Samsung LE32R82B. I looked at the user manual and tried googling the full spec online but can't find anything that says if it can handle MPEG 4. I think I bought the TV in 2007 so I assume that it isn't capable of receiving Saorview.

    Just RTÉ Two
    Samsung LE32R82B

Not on the Saorview list of approved TV. Quick search suggests it only has an Analogue TV tuner.

See here http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/television/samsung-le-32r82b/details/ under Technical Details.

To find out if this is the case just start an auto-tune and it will try to find both analogue and digital channels if it has any kind of Digital tuner build in .

What's the cheapest Saorview box and where to buy it?

Is there a difference (i.e. more features etc) between the Saorview boxes?

My existing cable into the back of my TV doesn't give a good signal - will that matter? Does the Saorview box basically convert the analogue signal into a 100% perfect digital picture?

From what I can see around €80 not much cheaper.

They are the 2 worst channels I have, TG4 is barely ever watchable.

Once your able to receive them you should then be able to hook a STB to your TV and aerial and get perfect reception. (You have an outdoor/attic aerial?)

€45 one from Sam Russell however you won't get Digital Aertel.
