Video Price Increase

Our wedding is on the 8th June next year. We have spent the last 10-12 months looking at different suppliers and now know who we want and are going to book them.

The guy we had in mind to do our video was last year charging 850euro for the package we want. On his website he is now charging 1000euro for the same package this year. I was hoping to get him down from 850 to 800.

Do people think i should say to him last year you were 850, theres a recession on, moneys tight etc and c if I can get him to the 800 or would he just say thats the price you should have booked last year?

Has anyone else noticed price increases like this when looking at suppliers?

    Thanks

Did he actually give you a quote, or are you just going by what his website says? You say you were looking last year? If he gave you a quote, was there a time limit on its validity?

Unless he recently gave you a quote, I dont' really think you should bring up what he charged last year. His price is his price now and you can always haggle, but I wouldn't expect him to drop it to match a price he advertised last year, if you didn't get a quote then. He might say that last year he was 850, and yes there's a recession, but inflation has caused his costs to raise, and so he needs to charge more.

I reckon you can mention it when you are haggling, but there's no way he has any obligation to reduce his price that much.

If he is good at what he does and his work is in demand now, he is entitled to raise his prices.

You can mention it to him but bear in mind a couple of things. He may have upgraded equipment to a higher level and as such needs to charge more to keep a wage and he may have also invested heavily in advertising again these costs need to be covered in price. It is not as simple as saying 'oh I think I will up my price by 250 for the hell of it'.

He could have had that price while establishing himself and now he is putting more of a value on his work. It could be a lot of factors, as Smelltheglove says equipment upgrades can cost a lot and at the moment a lot of videographers are moving to solid state recording media (from tapes to sd cards)
