Saorview - "the things that need fixing/added maybe thread".

With the official launch of Saorview today I thought it might be an idea to start a thread so that posters may want to highlight issues that may need resolving/improving with the service, be it picture, EPG issues etc. I raised this one already in the "RTE Two transmitting in HD resolution" thread: that of incorrect aspect ratios.

First is 4:3 material not being pillarboxed so that it is shown correctly on RTE2 HD. Its an issue as many brands of TV's can't select 4:3 if in 1080i mode as RTE2 HD always is.

    Image of RTE2 HD:
    160600.jpg

Example of pillarboxed material on CH4 HD:
    160601.jpg

Second is 4:3 material being transmitted in widescreen format regardless of SD/HD resolution. TV3 has been doing this for the last week or so. Up to this when 4:3 material was being broadcast, my TV automatically switched to 4:3. Now it's not doing so. Remains in widescreen mode, regardless of material format. Strange that this should suddenly become an issue so near launch time. 3e has always been guilty in this regard!

EPG data certainly needs a look at. Over the last few days a TV promo for sport on RTÉ Two this weekend in conjunction radio & print has some ambiguity as to which sports are/not being broadcast in HD. None of info relating to these programmes EPG data indicates HD or SD.

In the Argus Mini 2 in 1 combo on DTT the info button no longer displays the programme synopsis, has always worked until Tuesday/Wednesday of this week. RTENL have been made aware but having it here as well highlights the known problem.

    However, does RTENL ever listen???

I'm nearly certain that Channel 6 could do this on Sky years ago right up until TV3 took over and "improved" it.

What exactly does one need to view saorview. I have a spare tv up in the bedroom. A sharp aquos.
It has a dtv menu and an epg button. I tried the auto installation feature but it picked no carrier!
Anyone know if im missing something?

    Is there an aerial connected?

If so and there is still no TV channels it may not have an internal MPEG-4 video decoder. Do you have any sound from the TV or radio channels?

I've noticed this on my Triax box aswell. The 'Info' button used to give a synopsis but it is blank for me now. Somewhat disappointing as it was useful.

Many newspaper tv listings on Monday had no mention of the Obama coverage on RTE1 and TV3. Not surprising as these listings are sometimes submitted a few weeks in advance

However what was surprising is that the EPG for RTE1 displayed the normal Monday programming through the day when the Obama coverage was on. By contrast TV3 had the proper Obama coverage detailed in its EPG.

Oversight by someone in RTE I presume.

EPG programme info details a cast list first and then gives a brief summary of actual programme info. I think it would be bettere if this were reversed.

RTE NOW looks a lot better now but the font and font size on the scrolling banner at the bottom still looks very ugly compared with say Sky news or BBC News channel.

When their new playout system is sorted.
HD doesn't do 4:3, period. 4:3 material has to be inserted into a 16:9 frame.

Nothing to do with Saorview or RTE. TV3 has been miserable ever since they went on Sky about aspect ratio and WS flags matching reality. Nothing to do with RTE.

Outdoor aerial. Use http://www.saorview.ie/make-the-switch/coverage-checker/coverage-map/ find your nearest transmitter.

    As you're a noob that'll be €150 please.

Agreed, but I think they should copy France 24 and use a static panel which is replaced every 15 seconds or so. Much easier to read rather than trying to read at the scroll rate.

Sound quality on RTE Choice is very poor, sounds like 32kbps, it used to be better.

The EPG synopsis stored with recordings is sometimes out by half a day or so, this is on vu+ duo, but it also used to happen on Ferguson Ariva Combo, the time given for the recording was not the time at which it actually occurred...not sure who to blame for this:confused:

After RTÉ Two moves to the second mux I'd like to see the other channels put back to 720x576, but I can't see it happening. :(

Yes. CH4 HD does the job correctly, i.e. TV stays in widescreen mode with the 4:3 material properly displayed when using a Sky+ HD box. A Humax Freesat box also does this for both SD and HD channels. There's a 16:9 pillar box mode you can select in the menu.

Baffling! TV3 were doing it right, now they are not. As I said its bizarre they start mucking it up at this moment........

It would be nice if the RTE2 HD DOG was actually in HD, using the kind of perfectly sharp edges on Sky Sports HD, for example.

Current logo seems to be upscaled SD. We'll see if this changes when the content is HD tomorrow, but I doubt it somehow.

Yes, the actual graphic used is very soft - needs to be more crisp, but much lower intensity so it doesn't intrude so much.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,676 ✭✭✭swoofer

we should campaign for no DOGS or any onscreen rubbish when quality programs are broadcast, eg films, sports, documentaries.

Sky have got the message Sky Atlantic is now DOG FREE !! Whey Hey

Get Mount Leinster to vacate channel 45 !
It can and should be done for the optomisation of saorview reception in the south/east.

After a quick flick through Sky One, Sky Atlantic, Sky Living, BBC HD, and BBC One HD (had to look very hard for the DOG there), they have no excuse.

*Especially* for movies, at the very least.

Guys I'm watching saorview through rabbit ears in the back of my samsung 46" full hd tv. Will this give me saorview hd?

Yes, RTÉ2 is 1080i HD all the time, the broadcast material can either be upscaled SD or true HD. First true HD event this evening - Magners League Final.

Cheers, doesn't sky broadcast in 1080i too?

But Sky is a Foreign Pay TV only satellite broadcaster.

This is Irish Free To Air TV. Via an aerial.

I looked at subtitles yesterday just to see they were working. I was surprised to see they were leading the action by about two seconds. Obviously they would be in time for the analogue broadcast, but Saorview is delayed by about two seconds. This needs to be fixed. [It is equivalent to lipsync]

on 3e, the blank audio NAR channel is listed as ENG, some devices may default to this, alt-dvb does for me anyway

Issue seems sorted with TV3. 4:3 material being displayed correctly at the moment.
