Whem Obama was here for his 10 hour visit, his car got stuck on the speed bump / security ramp at the American embassey in Dublin.

Why was that not checked in advance I wonder ? You would think the country that 42 years ago could put men on the moon and not be running up foreign debt, would 42 years later be reduced to leaving their president stranded on a speed bump , while their countries debt crisis is accellerating ( 13,000 billion ? ).

"The beast" is not even that nice looking a car for 2011. Plenty of nicer looking cars in the world. 40 years ago America had great looking cars, a great economy ...anyone else think that place is slipping a bit ?

it's about protection, not looks. Looks won't stop a nine mm round from exploding his head all over the place

There's not a car here like it for it to have had a test run.

    That's a complete lie OP.

The Americans have never, ever, made a great looking car.

Do they not send ahead 2 cars , in case one breaks down etc ?

I thought later on the 2nd car took him out another entrance to the embassy ? ( while they got a crane to lift the 1st one off ! )

    Op, you're over thinking this.

Heavy car got stuck on speed bump thing.

    End.

According to the recovery guys who lifted it, the front suspension collapsed. I'm sure plenty of limos have gone in and out of the embassy without problems, hence why they didn't think there would be a problem.

Personally I think a more appropriate sign of the age that we're in is when the President can arrive in the country, plan a tree, have a meeting with the two heads of the country, make a trip across the country to stand around chatting for two hours and have a pint, get back again into Dublin city centre to give a speech to 100,000 people and leave on an aircraft barely 12 hours after he arrived.

For most politicians a trip to the Arás is about as much as they'd manage in a day.

No thanks, I'd rather a car that stops at a speed bump over a car that, well, doesn't stop.

The second vehicle wasn't the same as 'the beast' AFAIK. Plus it's a monster of a vehicle to drive around town doing a test run with it. Would have been a nightmare.

Eh, actually, they did that because you're not supposed to know which car he is in. So they have to block the view so you don't know whether he's switching cars or isn't even in the car that broke down in the first place.

Whoever was responsible for the construction of the embassy entrance, is the one that the Navy Seals will be taking out one night, whilst Obama and crew watch the spectacle on video-link from the comfort of the White House.

There are two "beasts" like there are two "Marine 1"s so that anyone who wants to aim an RPG at him has to do it in stereo. The logic is that if they take a shot at one of the vehicles, the secret service will have them immobilised before they reload and Mr.Pres has a 50:50 chance of not being disintegrated.

They had someone on the Joe Duffy show who knows the recovery truck people.
The front suspension collapsed, these things happen OP, even your car will have a mechanical failure of some kind one of these days.

Many limos have come in and out of the embassy over the years with no issues

They have had issues with armed gardai abandoning their post and getting drunk and then deservedly sacked though. Remember that shameful episode? ;)

There is a theory that when the limo high-centred, it cut an air line to the front suspension. The thing weighs quite a few tons, it doesn't have your standard spring suspension that you would find on the average DTS. The other possibility is that due to the angle that the car hit the ramp, one wheel went into the air resulting in excess weight on the other front wheel. If it has a torsion bar suspension and not airbags, it would likely have snapped it, which would also fit with the almighty clang. However, I discount this theory as I'm unaware of any torsion bar suspension systems which will collapse both wheels at the same time. Any torsion bar vehicle I've ever driven or worked on has been one bar per wheel.

    NTM
