Going to a counselor for the first time.

I know this might be a bit of a dumb question, but I'm really nervous about going to a counselor for the first time next week, and I just wanted some advice if you have some.

In the first place, I usually have a problem even talking to doctors: I might be sick or feeling back, but when I am actually sitting in front of a GP my natural instinct is to make light of whatever is wrong and say it's not too bad. I just don't seem to know how to find the balance between whining and exaggerating or saying too little and pretending the problem's not serious enough to be addressed.

Secondly, I don't know how comfortable I am discussing very personal stuff with a complete stranger, which I guess must happen to a lot of people, so I don't know how much is expected of me on the first appointment.

I am basically asking if any of you have experience in counseling and know what I should expect (what will I most likely be asked, how long is it going to be, etc).

It may not come as a surprise, but I'm going in to talk about my possible anxiety and difficulty in social situations.

Ah the first one will ease you in. They are trained in listening and having people opening up - it's quite different to having a chat with a random person. I went through it myself and I would have had the same concerns, but once you get in there it'll be a lot easier.
Best of luck to ya, it'll go grand :)
