As the title says, if you chew gum, are you burning calories?
Is there any benefit to chewing alot of gum?

    Does chewing burn calories?
Yes of course. Any movement requires energy and therefore calories.

Does it burn more calories than the gum contains?
Probably yes if its sugar free. Probably no if it contains sugar.

Will it make any impact on weighloss?
Not a chance, the calories burned are tiny. I'd say walking to the shop to buy the gum, has a bigger benefit than the gum it's self.

I would imagine that chewing gum 24/7 wouldn't be great for your stomach.

I remember being told in science class in school years ago that excess chewing gum can cause stomach ulcers, something to do with the stomach thinking theres food on the way and preparing for it, something like that :p

If I did it, Id have gas.

Raw celery is what you want OP. Chewing it, burns the same amount of calories as it contains(or so I have heard). So if you eat nothing but celery, you will create a deficit.

Drink plenty of cold water. This has two effects. It keeps your kidneys working which is good. Also, the energy required to warm up the cold water burns calories too. The only problem is, that a (large)calorie is defined as the amount of energy required to warm a kiogram of water by one degree. So if you drink 5 litre of water a day, you will burn about an extra 5 calories. Which is great until you put a spoon of sugar in your tea or have a sip of coke.

As other posters have said, the walk to the shop to get the gum does more for you than the gum does, so basically, walk more.

Get a pedometer, and track your steps per day. Its amazing, because it pushes you to walk a bit extra to get your number up. I have started getting off the bus a couple of stops early to improve my count, and yesterday I walked all the way home. That in iself is only about 120 calories burnt, but its better to move and burn some, then stay still and burn none.

    Em, think about that again.
You are correct in your definition of a calorie.
But how you used it was silly. See what I bolded above, By one degree

So 5 litres of cold water. Lets say 2 degrees, has to be heated to body temp, which is 37 degrees. Which is a 35 degree increase.
    5 litres x 35 degrees = 175 extra calories

Quite a difference to what you suggested above, do it everyday and its 1225 a week. It adds up

The sweeteners in them can cause a laxative effect if you over consume them.

Chewing gum can create false signals to your brain and your stomach will prepare to receive it, then you will get hunger signals when you stomach recevies no food

Another problem is chewing gum can cause TMJ a very painful jaw disorder...trust me I have it at present with a different cause but both dentist and doctor warned me it can also be caused by chewing gum and not to eat any

To have my TMJ fixed it will cost about 1000€ which will not be covered by either my medical card or my Bupa

Adding to your point about false signals, these signals produce digestive enzyme's, which depending on how often you chew gum, don't secrete, build up and can throw your digestive system off a bit, i.e to much fluid for excretion or too little fluid....ect

Otherwise chewing it does burn calories but not enough to take it into account in any kind of diet!

    Not at one go

5 lites over the course of the day isn't hard, I'd drink 3litres without even trying. My water comes from the fridge, or the cold tap so its at a max of 4 degrees.
