To be, or not to be.....(sedated)

So I just got back from the dental hospital where they told me I'm gonna have to get all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed (FML).
Its prob gonna cost a fortune too. Bastards.
I was given the option of being sedated or not when I get them done and I dunno which to choose. I've never even needed so much as a filling before so I'm new to all this.
I've heard its fairly painful but on the plus side I get a few days off work! :)
Should I just suck it up and go with just the local anasthetic so I can listen to my teeth break? Or should I puff on the laughing gas for a while and maybe even get a good buzz off it?!

    Sedated or not? 15 votes

    Sedation. Sedation. Sedation.

Get sedated. There's nothing worse than some fella sticking his rubber gloves in your mouth, followed by an array of drills, needles and scrapers. The less you remember of your first dental trip the better.

The sound of a toothe coming out of your own skull should not be experienced in todays world by anyone.

Had the local for mine while he did it. Heard nothing tbh, only pain was keeping my jaw stretched open, no other pain, but lots of dribbling and drooling for hours afterwards.

Man up. Dont use any anesthetic, its just a little pinch. Just make sure to get a lollipop afterwards.

If I was in you situation I'd go for as many drugs as I could possibly get.

I got my 4 wisdom teeth out aswell and got sedation. Was great craic-apparently I laughed through the entire 90 minute process and I dont remember a thing :D

That said, mine were impacted and involved removing chunks of my jaw so he wouldnt do it without the gas.

    I'm not allowed sedation...colonoscopy...bad touch..

Having wisdom teeth removed is a whole other level of excruciating pain.. nothing like having other teeth removed. You'd be mad in the head to turn down sedation. Even if the area is numbed it'll still be extremely uncomfortable.

I'm currently in a similar situation, in that i have to get four wisdom teeth out. I got to of them removed yesterday 2 weeks ago and i am due to get the other 2 removed in 2 weeks time. I had my removed with a local anesthetic and was back to work within 20mins. I didn't see the need to be sedated when the option to be awake was there. The procedure itself was painless and in no way unnerving, it was all over within 15mins (including the time it took to get the injection and time for the anesthetic to take effect).

Personally i wouldnt like to be sedated so i would definitely reccommend local.

    Best of luck!!

Had my 4 taken out with some form of sedation; was awake (which surprised me, I was expecting to be knocked out, it was combined with a local anasthetic) and remember it all vividly, but was really relaxed, even when the unexposed one crumbled under the pressure applied. They had a measure on my pulse, and topped the drugs up if my heart rate started to climb.

I don't know what it was, but I'd love some of it again, I don't think I've ever been so calm. Ever.

    Dammit, now I'm depressed!

Sedated, or they'd have to kill me first. After that, hack/drill away.

Sedation! I had all 4 of mine pulled out at the same time. I don't know why you wouldn't want to be sedated to be honest... Just make sure someone is there to help you get home, there's no way you can do it on your own.

Wow.. that's impressive. Which dentist did you go to? I guess it's different for everyone.. I had one removed a few months ago which was embedded pretty good in my jaw bone. It had to be split in four before it was removed, and even then it was difficult.

I opted for sedation thankfully, but was still awake throughout.

if you are having them all out at once is one thing, but if like me you had them one at a time its no biggie, feels kind of cool when the surgeon slices your gums and takes them out too, I decided no sedation for me!

    LIES!!

I had one(!!!!) whipped out and had the nitrous.Thank God I did.I was out of it afterwards (which was great craic, talking all kinds of garbled nonsense to my gf who drove me home)and my mouth was fairly tender around the area with the stitches for a couple of days.

I feel for you OP,I really do, but please go for the gas.

    Good luck

I got two wisdom teeth removed with only a local years ago...I ended up with a bruise on my chest from the doctors knee as they braced against me to pull. My neck hurt for a week and the crunching sound was horrible...I'd go with sedation.

    I'm sorry what??!!

I am having all 4 done at once. I originally was going for local anasthetic but now I'm kinda leaning towards being knocked the fúck out.

No hacksaws...just a pair of dental pliers and a dentist who later admitted perhaps they should have done it under general at the dental hospital! :pac:

All these terms are confusing me. Laughing gas doesn't mean you're not awake. I had local and gas and I remember it fairly well. The knee in the chest, that was great fun. ;) But seriously it wasn't so bad. Getting sick from the painkillers after, though, now that was bad.

I wouldn't ever go under general anaesthesia unless there was no other way. Too scary.

I had the same; pliers and a knee in the chest, about 15 years ago.

That's what I get for using someone elses medical card.

My mate had a similar experience. Crunching sound, followed by dentist going 'oh shit', then pliers and knee on chest. He broke the tooth trying to pull it ya see.. Had to dig around for the rest of it.
    Oh the humanity...

Firstly, get a second opinion! You may not need them removed. If you are going for it anyway, then get fully sedated. With only a general anaesthetic, you will still feel tugging and pressure. In fact, it will feel like all your teeth are going to come out in a complete set like in a cartoon. You will be trapped in the chair while the dentist, no doubt with one knee on your chest, breaks sweat while using all his strength to pull and pull and...do I need to go on? Not nice. Not nice at all. At least if you are asleep while it is being done, you may wake up with a sore jaw but you won't be traumatised...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,264 ✭✭✭Pretty_Pistol

Go with general anaesthetic. Who wants to be awake getting 4 teeth yanked from their jaw? And then if they need to hack away a bit of jaw bone. I'd rather not have them memories.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,571 ✭✭✭Aoifey!

    Sedated, definitely.

I got a general when I had all four of mine removed cos they were impacted and he had to start slicing some gum and poking around and because one of them was near a nerve and he didn't want me to end up with a permanently numb lip. Was eating proper food that evening! Wouldn't have been awake for it if you paid me  And yeah, if they need to get rid of some bone you probably won't want to be awake...

Ah, stay awake! I had 2 impacted ones removed awake. One came out very easily, the other took about 40 mins:eek:. Dentist was starting to pump sweat, and had to bust up the tooth into several pieces to get it out. Great sound effects:)

You would have to sedate me to get me in to a dentists surgery in the first place!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,788 ✭✭✭✭krudler

heres an experiment, get a boiled sweet and start chewing it with your back teeth, hear that crunching sound? now add the smell of rubber gloves, the taste of metal instuments and the taste of your own blood streaming out onto your numb tongue in a strange warm sensation, and feeling broken bits of your own teeth in your mouth. now add pain and discomfort to the mix.

thats a standard tooth being pulled.

    take the drugs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,419 ✭✭✭✭jokettle

I had 3 out last year, the fourth will have to come out soon enough. I had a general, the surgeon wouldn't even consider giving me just local. The roots were curved and I have problems with my jaw anyway, so it would have caused too much pain...unfortunately, I reacted badly to the general once I was in recovery. That was a very unpleasant hour!

Nevertheless, when I go for the same surgery soon I'm still ok with getting the drugs again. No way do I want to be awake for that. Enjoy the week off work afterwards, the difene/ponstan/whatever they give you will go really well with the ice cream, jelly, mashed potatoes and puréed veg you'll have no choice but to eat ;)

Pretty sure if I was up for four (FOUR!!?!) wisdom teeth he wouldn't even be finished saying "sedated" by the time I'd signed up.

Jesus wept, I'd sedate myself with a hammer sooner than go without for something like that.

Do us a favour and get somebody to interview you for youtube shortly after though, eh?

I've had wisdom teeth taken out before. I looked at the dentist skew-ways when he asked if I wanted to be sedated. On the pain-scale of things you could go through, this is a walk in the park.

Besides, I hear they laugh at your genitals till you come around.

    That should do it...

Same experience here. Had it done in the dentists surgery, no dental hospital etc. Bit of local to numb area, in he went, did the business, didn't hear anything, felt very little, had them out no problems. Only slight bit of discomfort as he was sewing up because the local was starting to wear off. I was up and walking about in about 40 minutes, with a wad of cotton wool to wipe the dribble up. No worse than donating blood at the bloodbank.

I think a lot of people here went to the wrong dentists, had messed up wisdom teeth or are telling tall tales.

Get sedation. It makes you very comfortable and wears off very quickly after the procedure has finished.

I had three wisdom teeth removed and I'm eternally grateful for that delicious midazolam.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,342 ✭✭✭seagull

Do they just need pulling, or do they need cutting out? I had two of mine pulled with just the local, and that was fine. If they're impacted and need cutting out, I'd definitely go for as much anaesthetic as they're offering.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,225 ✭✭✭JCDUB

I had a couple of impacted ones removed a few years ago, went for the full monty general anaesthetic, great job.

Before I was leaving the clinic, the nurse asked me how the pain was on a scale of 1-10. I said 8-9 and she went off and came back with a jab of morphine, whacked it in me leg and I was wasted for the whole day and night.

All in all a good day.
