European Cup Or League?

Simple question, would you rather your team win the domestic league, or win the Champions League? I assumed that the Champions League would always take precedence over a league title; not so says my Manchester United-supporting friend.

    Thoughts?

Depends on what you are used to. I reckon most man Utd fans this season would have preferred to win the CL rather than the league (all would prefer win both, but you know what I mean).

As a Barca fan I said early this season that the CL is the priority. I would have happily handed the league to Real if it meant a guaranteed CL victory.

But then for the likes of Liverpool, I would say they would have traded their CL in 2005 for a premiership.

I would think it depends completey on the situation.
If the league were to be the first ever league title the club had won or the first in X years, and they'd won the CL for the previous few years then I'd say the league is important.
If the league title is the one that makes you the most successful in your country then I'd say that's important.

Lots of supporters would give their right nad to be in the position where they would be discussing the dilemma in relation to their own club......

    Champions League
    League always.

CL and everything else is a bonus

    Champions League
as a man united fan, i can 100% say the league is my main aim every year.

the CL is only a bonus and nowadays your lucky to win it once every 10 years so once your out of it, the reality dawns that it is not the big aim.

obviously i would like to win all competitions and i was at both other cup games when we lost this year (west ham and city) and i was gutted to lose both, but the league is defo the priority.

i would have thought that would be pretty clear to be honest, expecially when united were after 17, 18 and now 19 over the the last 4 years.

i know practically every single liverpool, arsenal, city fan would give up entry to the CL next year if it meant they would win they league. chelsea is a bit different, as the russian is hell bent on winning it and its a let down for them year after year.

    Champions League
    the League.

that might be to do with the fact it's been over 20 years now, but i wholeheartedly believe the best win the leagues, and the European Cup is the glitz and glamour - the enormous bonus if you will.

the European Cup gives a great day/night of celebration, but at the end of the day it is a cup competition. the initial buzz will probably be more than the League.

but the feeling of knowing you're the best in your country over the last year, is far more satisfying in the long run.

    the League; every single time.

Always and forever the league. Cups are great to win, but to be crowned the champions of a country is always the priority.

Champions League is far more important in my eyes .
Alot more glamour, prestige and recognition attached to it.

Man Utd only had one European Cup before 1998 which for a club of its following was not satisfactory.
Having 3 now is alot better so the craving for more isnt as big.

Champions League means you are playing against the best teams in Europe not just your country.
Best golfer in England or Europe ?
Best tennis player in England or Europe ?
Best boxer in England or Europe ?
Why should it be any different for football ?

Because it can be argued that the best team doesn't win the cup. Which is true. A league is 38/36/34/33 games. That's a true test of how good a team is. A one off game is not.

    Champions League
League for me but the CL is still great competition to win.

I have been following the English, Irish and Scottish leagues for past 21 years and the best team always won the league each year, cant really say the same for CL.

But CL is still a competition that is still a huge honour to win, just you can get more luck to win it.

You could say that of most sports.
Tennis ,Grand Slams, best player doesnt necessarily win it.
Snooker,World Championship ,best player doesnt necessarily win it.
All Ireland Hurling and Football ,best team doesnt necessarily win it.
NFL,best team doesnt necessarily win it.
NHL,best team doesnt necessarily win it.
NBA,best team doesnt necessarily win it.
They are all cup tournaments of one form of another .
    The list goes on.

The standard of team in the Champions league is far higher than any one domestic league .
True there is an element of luck involved in winning it but the best team usually wins it .

There is world rankings for tennis, snooker and golf which is how you decide who is the best.

The other tournaments you've named you're right, the best team rarely actually wins it! Look at 2007 for example in the NFL. Patriots were the best team but yet in a one off game in the final they were beaten. They are still seen as the best team that year though.

Its still a shallow victory when you are awarded a cup that says you were the best team in Europe yet not be the best team in your own country

Champions League for me. It shows you can adapt your game depending on who you are playing so winning IMO shows you are the best in Europe and not necessarily quality but also how you can adjust to a different pace or style of football but I could see why some clubs' fans would prefer the league.

Not every game has to be mouthwatering, but at least they're champions.

    I'd watch it ahead of Tottingham 1-0 Meelan over 180 minutes (4th place 09-10 v 3rd place 09-10)

There was a time when I genuinely would have said Champions League (probably because I genuinely assumed we'd have brought home more league titles than we have since the last one), but God I'm gagging to see Arsenal win the league again!!!

A myth - Pure and Simple. The best team always wins unless there is corruption involved. You cant fluke your way to a European Cup or as its known now the CL.

Only reason fans say the league is because when you win it you have one up on your rival team(s).

The Champion's League is far more prestigious but you don't really have one up on your rival team(s).

The real legacy building is done in Europe. There's a reason Real Madrid, Liverpool and AC Milan have a richer history than Man United or Barcelona.

As a United fan I voted for Champions League. I'm happy with the 19 league titles and now want another 2 CL wins. I hope to see that blue badge on Uniteds european shirts before fergie calls it quits. It will also mean we will be level with Liverpool which would also be nice.

When people talk about the greatest clubs in the world they talk about European titles not domestic leagues. When they talk about the great teams they talk about Di Stefano and Paco and Real Madrid, Beckenbaur and Muller and Bayern, Cruyff's Ajax, Dalglish and Liverpool, Maldini and Milan etc.

Nobody cares that they won a domestic title or three or four or even twenty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,778 ✭✭✭Big Pussy Bonpensiero

^That's a fair point, you don't hear anyone going on about the United team of the nineties unless its in reference to the 99 team, and you certainly don't hear anyone talking about that Real team of the mid 00's where they won La Liga twice/three times in a row (don't recall the exact no. of times). To be remembered you must win a CL title, end of, but it must come hand in hand with a league title, IMO.

I dont agree, prior to the creation of the Champions League this was the case but not anymore, Champions League is so much harder to win than the old European Cup. Hence the reason no club has really dominated it for long periods like Liverpool, Madrid, Ajax or Munich did in the past.
