    Hi all,

Can anyone explain to me the difference between wrought iron and steel gates please? I have 2 quotes, 850 euro for wrought iron gates, dipped in galvanise and powder coated and 1350 euro for steel gates, dipped in galvanise and powder coated? To me, a gate is a gate, so am leaning toward the cheaper option unless there is a major flaw with wrought iron that I don't know about?

    Many thanks in advance.

They are form 2 different suppliers. The portfolio of the wrought iron guy isn't overly decorative in comparison what the steel guy showed me.

The wrough iron guy has an ad here:

please don't do this - read the charter

Basically you are paying for the amount of steel and decoration in the gates, also some fabricators use hammered edge hollow section to save on weight, where as others use solid bar. You need to quiz them on exactly what you are getting.
Dont be forced into choosing a gate that is shown in a portfolio. you can make up your own design.
What size are your gates, because 850euro seems very cheap, unless they are very small and basic. To get a set of say..12ft ie 2 by 6ft gates dipped can be from 200 - 380 euro and powder coating about 180 euro. Add steel and labour on top of that...
Make sure the gates ARE dipped, chip off a small bit of paint to check.

Wrought iron, even though it has an carbon content, is not the same as steel (whoch has a higher carbon content). But it is not pure iron either.
Quite often mild steel is used and marketed as wrought iron, whiel not technically accurate, it's not a big deal.

The difference in price is most likely down to level of decoration, and quality of gates (hollow section verses solid bar and not the material used.

The designs by both suppliers are quite similar.

    See the examples <SNIP>

These guys are based in Galway and are offering free fitting nationwide!?!

It seems to good to be true from what I'm hearing, so I'm guessing it probably is?

The gate size is 14 ft (7 foot leaves) x 2 metres
