:( Had to remove all the bird feeders today as a rather large rat has appeared on the scene. Had no problem up to now. Put down traps but seems to be a clever bugger, tripped them all. Not taking any chances as he is quite close to back of house. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

you might have been "feeding" him/her for quite a while without realising it.

it might not have been him/her tripping all the traps either.

Thanks for the replies. You are probably right in that he has been feeding for a while. Watched him yesterday around the traps, he tripped the trap and took it up the other end of the garden and left it there. Horribly fascinating to see. Will try baiting as well.

Where do you get the traps? do you bait them with anything? /poison

Ive seen a few around, but not recently not sure if they are gone now, there is no food left at the bird feeders as I didnt replace it after I saw them (1 rat on two different occasions).

Just 1 rat that I can see. Got the traps at Woodies, they are black ones and I baited them with a little peanut butter as per instructions on the back but he bounced the bait out of the holder when he triggered it and legged it.

oh right, i thought something else might be setting them off too without getting caught but if you have seen him do it then.....

they are fairly sharp alright. i had one trying to dig a tunnel underground into my hen house. he got found out when he got too close to the surface and it caved in a bit.

Do you know anyone with a terrier?

Would a Jack Russell be naturally inclined to chase out a rat? I was thinking of getting one anyway, just wondering if they would have to watch another dog hunt or would they have a natural inclination to do it?

    Instinct should do it.
I have one but she's only about 6 months old. I'd be slow to let her go ratting just yet, but judging by the way she tried to kill one of my chicks yesterday I'd say she'd have no problems with a rat.
