Hi, im studying Games development in Carlow it and I'm on the look out for work experience for the summer. It doesn't have to be Games related as I would jump at the chance to work in a software house. Of course i'm offering myself on a voluntary basis and would be grateful if anyone can help me get some industry experience.
If you want any of my details dont hesitate to ask.

    Cheers

Have you thought about looking helping out with some open-source games? There are loads out there that are worth a look. Of course it depends on what you've studied. How about Battle for Wesnoth (written in C++)?

Check out Google Summer of Code also:

Cool, the google code thing is closed to registration but thanks for making me aware of it. The thing is; I have plenty of my own portfolio to do. I'm working on numerous projects from a game to a physics engine and Apps for the mobile market. I just want to shadow someone and learn from peoples experiences. I would like something full time and actually interact with people instead of contract work.

Can you do linear algebra? Any graphics experience with opengl/directx? PM links to your linked-in profile and dropbox cv please. I already have one work experience contractor, but if you are suitable I could take another. Yes, I pay work experience guys, not much tho and they work remotely a lot.

Yep can do linear and had a module on OpenGl this year. Here is the module at a closer look so you can gauge what I know/should know.

Just for clarity I had a module on Applied Physics this year too which focused on Mechanics and Newton's laws. Looked at approximation methods also.

    Here is the link:

That's great. Physics/maths is what makes a gamedev, programming is easy. PM me stuff please. My company does specialised opengl research on desktop/mobile, most income is from finance sector but we do mobile games on the side (kinda hard not to since we do all this advanced graphics stuff anyway). You could learn some killer OpenGL stuff.

Here is pretty terrible demo the other work experience guy has lashed together: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4436079/apk/CHEEZBURGER.apk (android opengl 2.x demo, won't work on emulator).

Sounds cool, I'm in if you'll have me. I sent you a PM there.

For anyone else thats interested I'm studying C# and C++ in college as well as the above stated opengl and physics. I've studied Evolutionary design models like the Unified Process and use the Uml tool Umlet for diagrams/documentation. I'm learning Java in my own time but it is very similar to C# so its a small learning curve and I'm also just getting into mobile development but should be up to production levels pretty quickly. I can find my way around Adobe products too and can do some modelling.

Keep looking I am sure there are internships out there and if not try applying for non game dev positions if you have to which will give you 90% of the experience you want.

I don't have much of a preference between a games dev job and a general dev job at all and I'm applying for both. I would jump at the chance to work along side any kind of a developer. Even post grad Ive no bones about working in a Software position. Employers just don't seem to have the time for a person looking for voluntary work for whatever reason but I'm able to get contract work

Have you tried talking with one of your lecturers? sometimes it takes "someone who knows someone" to get these type of positions.
    Speaking from experience :)

There's a shortage of developers with relevant experience which, given you're still in college, you don't have.

Yeah one of my lecturers set me up with contract work and some testing roles this week. Pretty sound of em to do it! He put me in contact with a guy for full time work also so just waiting on a call ;)

Idk do many employers lurk around here? Any of you kind gentlemen willing to recommend me to your Bosses...please...will give **** for work

I know of a charity based in Galway who are looking for someone to create a social media game for their site / Facebook page. I think they require a payment system integrated so players donate a few pence to the charity every time a level is completed.

    PM me if interested.

There is a difference between "work for free" and "work experience".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 627 ✭✭✭Dboy85

Very few people want work experience students around. And when they do they want to exploit rather than bestow knowledge. I'm looking for the later, similar to what srsly78 offered. I'll allow exploitation as long as it benefits me
