I understand that charities request references when applying for volunteering jobs. Unfortunately the (two) people who usually gave me references are both seriously ill and I won't be able to approach them for references. Also my two preferred previous employers are now retired and I don't have their home contact info. I worked for them years and years ago and the staff there don't know me or them at this stage. Any suggestions?

A Member of the Clergy or Teacher who knows you? Your GP, if you have one?

Personally I think it can be a bit excessive of organisations to be too demanding when it comes to references etc of Volunteers. In come cases one character reference should be enough.

Thanks lst. I hoped my post might give a clue to my age! Two friends seriously ill, and two employers now retired! But obviously not! Sorry about that, but any of my teachers left this world many years ago. I have a GP but thankfully I wouldn't see him that often, so don't think I could ask him for a reference. The church is the last resort I suppose. Years ago that would have been my first choice, now its my last! My, how times have changed.

I had put teachers in as I assumed if you are in a sub-urban or rural area you have a history of being involved and therefore may know teachers or a teacher socially or otherwise (not as a student!). I knew you werent recently finished school, I actually be more nervous than anything if a school leavers only references are school teachers! I meant using a teacher as while they are not your teacher or employer, they are a person of integrity with a title in the community.

A friend who is a Priest recently got a reference request - his first in ages. In times past it was a regular occurance, now he cant remember the last time it happened. Still in fairness its a reference!
