Mineral water - are they for real or a con?

I ask because I genuinely don't know myself if its all a con, if some are of decent quality or is it all a capitalist plot to rob us!
(I wonder if I barrel rainwater, can I sell it?)

If anyone has any info or thoughts, I look forwards to relishing in them in my thirst for further awareness. :D

    evian spelled backwards... naive

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,018 ✭✭✭Mike 1972

Its illegal to sell tap water labelled as "mineral water" but perfectly fine and dandy if its labelled as "spring water"

I wouldnt write it off as a total scam. The tap water in some areas is pretty terrible.

    -Evian is Naive spelled backwards

-There's a difference between spring water (ballygowan) and mineral water (Tipperary)

-i only buy it because the tap stuff in work tastes like it was stored in a rectum.

    -It's cheap in Lidl.

Spring water = spring water *

Bottled at source = The tap out the back?

    *may not be true

Does anyone actually test the stuff or is there a org/regulation section that regulates the content for certain aspects, to decide what is and isn't genuine?
    Anyone know?

Bottled water sales in places where there is clean water on tap is the triumph of marketing over logic.

I studied all aspects of water treatment and supply some years ago. If I remember correctly, tap water must meet stricter regulations than normal bottled water. Anything labelled 'mineral water' is of a higher quality than normal bottled water and most tap waters.
In short, bottled water is a scam but if you must buy it, buy one labelled mineral water.

Obviously some tap waters look terrible and dont taste so nice but in terms of the likelyhood of making you sick, even the worst looking tap water is meeting higher standards than normal bottled water has to meet.

It takes 6 bottles of water to process a bottle of water.

Back home in Tipp we have a filter installed. All normal tap water and bottled water tastes a lot less clear than the filtered water.

A kilometre or two down the road from us there's also a spring too. Water tastes lovely from there.

It already is a litre of oil in its processed form (petrol/diesel) costs roughly the same as half a litre of bottled water.

I'm just waiting for people to start drinking inkjet printer ink because it must be good to cost so much.

That's true, a few years back someone did an investigation and found out that it's just tap water bottled in Coca Cola, they responded by saying that they never said it was "spring water" and that's why it says "INGREDIENTS: PURE STILL WATER FROM DEEP UNDERGROUND"

Funnily enough, they're still achieving growth in the market with it.

Depends, in general the public water system has more testing than the bottles.

If you bottle tap water you can put the results of the public tests on the bottles.

Deep River Rock is what Desani is now called here. That's because Coca Cola screwed up and put bromates in the filtered tap water.

I could mention Perrier and Benzine.

Or the plasticisers in plastic bottles , Ballygowan talk about 800 years of purification but the water has a best before date.

Never heard of that stuff before but by god it must be a miracle cure! :pac:
Sourced from the famous ‘Holy Well of Cartmel’ in the Lake District, this region was once a prehistoric forest of white willow trees, the source of the salicin. The water has been legendary for its restorative qualities since the 1700s.

Salicin - a derivative of White Willow bark – has been known since Hippocrates’ days for its anti-inflammatory properties. The calcium comes from the filtration process as rain from the Cartmel Fell penetrates down through natural limestone layers.

Drinking Willow everyday improves the complexion making it clearer and blemish-free. At the other end of the scale, Willow can help with more serious skin conditions. Willow has received hundreds of testimonials from its loyal customers, many of whom suffered extreme skin problems for years until they tried Willow - there truly is something in the water.

That's it ladies, you can now throw away the facial Pollyfiller! :D

Carbonated mineral water ('agua con gas') is so different from regular tap water that I don't even think of them as the same thing. It's a good alternative to soda if you want something cold and fizzy when the weather is warm. Vichy Catalan is lovely and isn't terribly expensive - it's cheaper than soda and has a bit of flavor and bite to it.

You can buy it in dunnes, I had a few bottles of it before, It does taste nice and theres usually silt in the end of the bottle.I saw a documentary about it a few years back.

I was involved in a major supermarket setup in the NE at one stage.
There was a local water supplier that all the locals kept asking for, but we didn't stock it.
A buyer for my company was in store one day so I asked him why we didn't stock this local product as customers were always asking for it.
He responded that they had visited the plant with a view to getting them on board, but the conditions there were so bad he wouldn't give it to his dog.
BTW, there is plenty of evidence of high levels of faecal contamination in bottled waters around the country.
Why people don't buy home filters and bottle their own water for work etc always boggles me. They obviously haven't been hit by the recession yet.
Petrol is cheaper than water FFS!

Always thought it funny how people order bottled water in a pub... and then ask for ice.

Our tap water tastes like mould with a hint of bleach. It's vile, even with MiWadi in it it's barely drinkable. I never drink it unless I really have to.

Just came back from that part of France. Volvic is big there. The taste you get is probably because its from a volcanic region hence volvic

If you fill the bath in my house, before you add any soaps or whatever, you can smell chlorine. Friends have said the same. It tastes woeful too.

Water jug and filter very necessary.

Eh, no - Guinnes is now a Diageo product while Beamish orignally came from Beamish & Crawford brewery in Cork, now ownd by Heineken Ireland.

EDIT: I meant company in the first post not country - will edit this one to highlight my mistake.

If you notice with the chlorine, the water filled into a glass will settle quite like guinness if left for a few moments and will then become clear. The chlorine actually goes off into the air once the water exits the pressurised system and at that stage has done its job of keeping the water safe for comsumption.

So if chlorine is your only problem, just keep a jug of water for drinking in the fridge or whatever - this way, the chlorine will have had time to disappear after filling from the tap. A filter is not really needed for anything to do with chlorine
The only way I can see chlorine being present in bath water is if the bath is fed direct from the mains under pressure. If the bath is supplied from attic tank, the chlorine will already have evaporated off at the point of filling the attic tank. Perhaps its a different chemical problem. If so, it is worth looking into.

It is also not recommended to make baby formula from bottled water, although I did one morning I was short a drop of milk for my corn flakes so I had to improvise.
