Best laptop for Film/Media

    Hi Guys,

Im looking to buy a laptop for college for a film/media course - have never had one before. I will be using it for college work, general internet, movies and music.
I want to spend as little as possible on the best laptop I can get. Ideally around 800 but I could possibly stretch that a bit.

I really like the look of the Sony Vaio's but am wondering if they are reliable and would they do what I need it to?

Any feedback would be really appreciated! Thanks

Can you contact the college to see what programs they focus on i.e. Mac or Windows.

Thats your biggest decision as media courses generally have a preference.

I always find Sony to be more pricey for the Spec than the likes of Acer.

A lot of people (including me) seem to be excited about the Lenovo s205.

It will play 1080p HD movies no problem and be absolutely fine for general college work and internet browsing. About €360 delivered from Amazon which is a great price.

Not many reviews though but hopefully some will be coming out soon.

As hearny said check what platform the college focuses on. If the course is very film orientated it could very well be a Mac you're looking at.

As for laptops the Dell Studio range used be good value for money, now they seem to have replaced it with the XPS range and value isn't really there.

I don't think Sony are too pricey compared to some other brands when you factor in the quality and screen, the Sony screens tend to be better quality and have higher resolutions than many others with similar hardware otherwise. If you're doing a media course you'll want a decent screen.

This €770 Sony is much better for the price than this €1100 Dell and comes in just under your budget.

This Acer is relly good for the money too, cheapest of the lot but has the most RAM and same processor as the Sony but the screen won't be as good.

Shop around and get in touch with course leaders in the college if you can :)
