Hi. hoping some people may have suggestions on what i could do in this situation.

In 2010 I completed honours degree in English and History in Ireland. I am dying to be a teacher (secondary level). Have relevant experience with children and relevant experience in teaching in a secondary school.. I failed to get the pgde so made other arrangement for awhile, to gain experience etc.. I am now in Abu Dhabi, teaching in a school, and getting very good experience.. I have almost one year down, and considering staying on for year 2, with the situation in Ireland at the moment I feel its wiser to stay here and have a job than be jobless in Ireland.. my plan is to re apply for the coming December with the HOPE of securing a place second time round.. but what I'm wondering is - is there anything additional I can be doing at the moment to further my chances of being successful in securing the pgde next time.. like maybe additional courses in relevant areas of education (i'm thinking maybe online as i work full time).. or anything else I can do.. I just don't want to be in the same position I was in last time after I didn't get the pgde.. I want to do anything that will benefit me..

thanks in advance for your suggestions..

Experience of teaching is the best preparation possible, At an interview for the the course,
if you can show that after your experience of teaching that you love your subjects and and want to teach them, I think you couldn't get a better applicant to be to train as a teacher!!.

Maggie you should see if you can do any evening courses related to teaching if you can! I done a CACHE course for special needs assistants and another FETAC course for Classroom Assistants which gave me an extra 2 points for the PGDE, they were only cert courses but done the job!hth!:D best of luck next year!

I have absolutely no idea sorry!:o I did a quick google of it there and this college came up
    http://www.openstudycollege.com/teaching-assistant_courses.html
don't know how far away from the college is the maximum but theres an info email address if you wanna try them!
Open University might do the same kinda course either! If it's an England based course it'll be the CACHE Level 3 Certificate for Teaching Assistants and if it's the Irish one it'll be FETAC Level 5 Certificate for Classroom Assistants and Special Needs Assistants. They're both similar courses just different awarding bodies!
If you're home for the summer you could try local colleges or IT's etc etc. I live close to a PLC college (now an IT) but they do short courses over the summer for adult education things in the evenings and it's always FETAC courses on. You'll prob get more info bout that on the VEC webpages!:)
