Just wondering here folks, been thinking about it a bit especially after a friend showed me his UK license.

Now the Irish government can't do anything like this without charging for it, so I was thinking a flat fee of €15 including postage etc would be fair (to a certain degree) to upgrade your current license to a credit card style with all the same details on it.

This cost would cover the production of the new license, postage and admin fees etc. In this idea the upgrade would be mandatory and you'd have 3 months to do it.

Poll should be attached if this works right..

    Poll added, my bad

i would love to have this card style licence and would be willing to pay for it,
the licence i have at mo, it is the bulkiest item in my wallet, and is ill fitting scrunched in to a compartment, and now hard to read due to creases, a nuisance really

I'd be fine with that. As it is I go through around 3 copies of my current licence during it's 10 year lifespan due to it getting ripped up in my wallet, and I have to pay a couple of quid each time.

A small one would be handy, esp for travelling or for ID-costs 25 currently for a new licence and a tenner for an international licence? 15 might be a bit steep but, a tenner would be perfect & yeah I'd pay,
Isnt the Garda ID card a tenner too?

No poll showing there for me anyway,-

    Ah, there it is now!-

If it was €15, then yeah

But if they introduce it, it will surely cost more

I'd pay €40 for a ten-year credit card style licence tbh.

My current one is wrecked, but with five months left on it, I can't renew it for another two months. Just hope that Hertz will accept it next month!

In a heartbeat tbh. Well worth 15 quid. The current license is a laughing stock outside of the country sure...

I got a 10 year one last time and after having it for 3 weeks it ended up going through the wash :( it's now in terrible condition with another 9 years left to go on it...:o

In that case I would, otherwise I wouldn't. I honestly don't care what my license looks like, it lives in my sunvisor and I never look at it.

    +1

But they should definitely be changed and ASAP, the current ones are ridiculously large and don't fit in ones wallet/purse they could also be used for ID in pubs clubs etc.

    Just report it lost?

I managed to lose my first 2 provisional licenses and then my first full license. I pulled the drivers side glove out of my car for some reason a while later and there they all were sitting behind it. Wouldnt have happened if i could fit it properly in my wallet

You can get a replacement licence for free (or €4 I think) if it's been damaged. I just haven't been bothered doing so, as it's almost up anyway. Hasn't been a problem so far, so fingers crossed :D

Edit: Actually, it's €10. Not bad:
    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/travel_and_recreation/motoring_1/driver_licensing/replacing_a_lost_or_stolen_irish_driving_licence.html

It was €4 about five years ago. I sent off my licence after passing the motorbike test, to get the new category added to it. I stuck 2 x €2 coins in the envelope and I got my new licence back....with the coins. Brilliant, fair dues to whoever processed that one.

I'm averaging a new licence every 2 years, they are a disaster!

The current licence is a nightmare to keep in one piece but i bet we'll still be carrying pink bits of paper around with us in 10 years time

Am I the only one that has their license in pristine condition?

I mean, it's in a protective sleeve in my wallet. How could you damage it?

My wallet is slightly smaller than my licence, so the bottom of the licence has a permanent curve in it, which has resulted in the edges of the document having worn away and disappeared. I might post an anonymised version of it for the laugh.

I've searched for a decent wallet big enough to fit the whole licence, but to not avail.

My licence sits in my glove compartment...

I voted yes for the credit card one though, we really ought to get one that doesn't look so fake.

Ive mine in my arse pocket with my passport behind it for solid backing. Seems to work

  • Yes but it shouldn't be mandatory
mine's in perfect condition as it remains in the only car I drive. For anyone who drives more than one car, I could see it being an absolute nightmare due to its shape and size and material!

We pay 100ish for a 10 year passport, 15 for a National Age Card. I'd have no problem paying up to 50 for a 10 year driving license if it was going to last the 10 years, be eternally mobile (a la credit card size) and usable as ID and abroad.

You pay €10 a year for the privilege of owning an ATM card, would you be happy to pay half that to have a durable license? I know I would.

Since when do I get charged for an atm card?

Yes but it shouldn't be mandatory
    In a heartbeat.

It should also be machine readable with all your information including (opt-out) organ donor information & blood group. Your traffic violations & car/insurance details should also be included.

I was in San Diego about 10 years ago & we were going to a bar. The security stopped us & asked for ID & we handed over out drivers licences, we were laughed out of it.

We waved down a cop & asked them to verify & he pulled a huge book ouot of the boot with every driving licence in the world printed in it, turned to Ireland & there was our provisional & full. with a warning that the provisional is available to under 18s.

He showed the doorman & they let us in, but the bar was **** so we ended up leaving anyway.

I dont need to use an ATM in order to get money, you do need a license to use your car. Not to mention the large amount of money we already give the goverment in order to use our cars they could at least subsidise the cards cost.

Well if you could get the current one free, and the credit card one for €50, would you pay the €50 or would you stick with what you've got?

That's the crux of the issue, and I reckon that most if not all would be happy to pay the "additional tax".

It would gladly pay as many police forces think the current licence is a joke.

All you have to do is search boards for countless posts about US police officers stopping people and nearly tearing it to shreds because they think it's fake

But :) the UK license is in two parts.. The credit card which you saw, and a paper sheet which is even bigger than the Irish license.. Rental companies etc. all require both parts in order to hire cars etc.

Yes, I would pay if it was a single credit card system, but I wouldnt pay if it was similar to the UK 2 part system.
