Power problem on MkIV Golf TDi

I have a 02 Tdi Golf 100BHP that has lost most of it's power. Driving home this morning I stopped getting any boost from the turbo at it's usual 1500RPM but seem to be getting some at around 2500RPM (don't fancy driving the ****e out of it to get a little bit of boost though).
I did an oil and filter change on it during the week, used VW filter and 5W30 oil (was recommended using this grade by a friend but since it's my first time using it I said I better add that bit of info).
When I floor the accelerator it really seems to choke up the engine but when I accelerate slowly I'm getting a much better response from the engine. Still have plenty of torque from the engine but no acceleration. Any tips on what's causing my problem and where i should be looking. Haven't had a chance to look around for anything yet but hoping to get it up on a lift tomorrow to have a snoop around

Sounds like the air mass meter, (also called air flow), had this issue on a passat a few years ago.

for a start i beleive the proper oil is 5-40 fully senthetic pd oil but couldnt be 100% on that...secondly you coud have a number of problems ...faulty air mass meter faulty boost solinoid too knackered turbo...my suggestion would be to check the turbo for play...or maybe disconnect the air mass meter and see if the car still runs the same

I'd be 99.9% sure its the MAF (Mass air flow sensor)

Very common issue on VW and other vag cars

Disconnected the airflow meter there and took it for a short spin, seems to be running slightly better so will swap it out tomorrow with one from my mates car.
Always used 5W/40 but afore mentioned mate (who has a stack of Golfs parked outside) said he always used 5W/30 fully synth. Only mentioned it in case the different oil grade had f**ked up the oil pressure or flow to the turbo! Better safe than sorry after all

The viscosity of the oil depends on if your using longlife or fixed interval servicing.

Fixed Service: 5w40 (VW 505.01) = 10k miles between services
    Longlife Service 5w30 (VW507.00) = 20k miles between services

So your mate is correct regards the viscosity but it might havent been the approved VW standard oil you filled the car with.

I would also recommend performing a diagnostic scan on the the ECU to see if there is any logged fault codes which would prove useful in identifying the possible cause of the problem.

Sorry for the late reply, but got a new airflow meter and it sorted the problem. Thanks for the help
